Whatever the latest stuff happens to be is working fine for me. No accelerated X, despite being given the option for it. I've considered hitting the button to see what happens though...

So as someone who's used both, Robor, should I just screw 6.10 and jump into 7.0x? I've had 6.10 on for less than a day, so it's not like I'll be losing anything. :p

Forget stable, come play with the adults in beta land.

I'm probably not the best one to ask just because I'm not very knowledgeable (sad but true). :p

I'm using Feisty on my personal laptop and so far so good. Nothing has broken yet and everything is working fine but I'm just doing some browsing (Firefox), Email (Thunderbird), and text chat (Gaim). I installed BOINC on it yesterday and it's crunching away for Rosetta@Home.

I have Feisty installed on my 'server' at home but haven't done anything with it since the initial install. When I get some time (get off my arse) I plan to make it a file server and setup XP Media Center in a VMWare machine for my XBox360.

I'd say go for it but have a look over on UbuntuForums.org to see if there's any issues with things you might be doing.

Muahahahahah :):):):):):):):):)
OMG !!!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
See bolded lines. I updated to 2.6.11 and rebooted before even touching the Add/Remove Programs wizard.

And yes, I did the same thing twice. Perhaps it didn't work because my wife was nearby the first time, and we all know Linux users can't get women.

This problem is relative to you and only you.
In fact, womens possibly like linux more than they like you, she is near you too, the computer is not to be blamed !

muahahahahaha :):):):):):):):)

Me and my wife, we are laughing here until have a stomachache .
She thank me a lot to our switch to Linux.
We never felt tense anymore because of the computer after the switch.
We live our lives to us and not anymore for the computer maintenance or paranoias of news virus or spywares, we do not have fear anymore to use internet banking if our anti-crap is out of date,in fact we don't have any kind of anti-crap here.
Because we don't have the crap anymore.

My wife says:
Good, his computer is getting him tense. May he is needing to take his wife to a dinner, ( a good one ).

Such a convincing argument. :p

Other than the video drivers killing themselves (and X) the rest of the hardware was detected fine. Perk of older hardware, I guess. Why the hell not, if I want stability I'll use XP. :p

Sure, there's lots of blobs. They come in AGP and PCIe format, and are commonly called "Video cards that don't suck ass." :D

I think my most troubling complaints about ubuntu is its blantant respect for patent law. I hate all the work arounds needed to rip with k3b, or to watch dvd's, play other vids, etc. I find gentoo's lack of patent respect refreshing. No work arounds like all the other distros. Its too bad the compile times sucks. What I want is ubuntu without the respect.

It's nice, but I already know the 3rd party solutions to a problem that would not exist with stock applications. These problems would not exist if I complied my own system. They do not exist in gentoo. They only exist in distro's worried about getting sued (and apparently the program designers are not worried). Its sad that you have to install 3rd party sources to get your system to work as intended. I'm not sure if there is a solution to the problem though. However I wonder how its legal to post howto's to do 'illegal' things on your site, but not actually host the binarys.

Nah, no Automatix. I started off using it and while it's good for beginners it's so easy it's like cheating. ;) More importantly you don't learn anything. Just add the necessary repos and install the apps you want. There's pretty much a step-by-step how-to for everything. :)

That and in the past, not sure if it's still true, it had a blatant disregard for the integrity of your system. It would use dpkg --force-* to wedge packages into place whether they should actually be there or not. It may be easy on the outside but eventually you ended up with a broken system.

Yea, you really gotta love someone that doesn't respect the work and wishes of others. :/

Yea, you really gotta love someone that doesn't respect the work and wishes of others. :/

Plus potentially opens up you and your company to major lawsuites. What Gentoo is essentially doing is handing off the legal responsability for their own actions off onto the end user, which is a bad thing. Personally I think that software patents are fundamentally flawed and it's perfectly ok to disregard them entirely, but you have to be aware of the legal consiquences of having a attitude like that.

Most people don't understand the legal ramifications of, say, using Gentoo as a streaming media server for a service. Something like, say, a college campus mp3 radio station.
Something like that will easily get your employers sued and you fired.

So Linux distributions realy have a legal responsability to their _end_users_, not to do anything that will potentially screw them over.

When I use Debian or Fedora Core, I know those people have done licensing audits and take it seriously. I may not agree with all their decisions, but I appreciate the hard work they do. I know that with those I can take them and modify it. I can use it for any purpose. Build streaming servers with the software they provide. Bundle it with hardware. Use it in embedded systems. Sell copies of cdroms on Ebay. Sell PCs to people. Use it for anything and everything I want.

I don't have to consult lawyers and do the licensing audits myself. I know that it's all Free software and worst case is that I'd have to deal with the requirements of the GPL license.

With Gentoo or other similar things, I don't know that. I can't trust it and I need to be paraniod about what software I use in it.

Ignoring the law is not a good way to deal with the law. If you don't beleive me, go and visit any county courthouse or correctional facility and you can find usually several hundred people figuring that out the hard way. Of course with software the penalties are financial, but that can be worse sometimes.

Even then you have to be careful, for example you have to pay for a license to decode MPEG streams and yet packages like ffmpeg are still available in Debian.

Upgrading to 7.04 in-place right now, let's see how it goes.

Yeah, Automatix will get that pesky dignity right out of Ubuntu!

For those who haven't already figured out by the length of time between posts, it went "Sh**ty." Linux is evidently just as falliable as Windows when it comes to in-place upgrades. Shame on me for thinking otherwise.

Also, screw partitioning, I'm going "separate OS, separate drive."

Don't think 'Linux', think 'Ubuntu'. Debian has always done terrific job of doing it.

Plus it's probably a bug with the beta version of Ubuntu, unless it's a deal with propriatory drivers, then there isn't realy anything anybody can do about it.
