I would just add the ultrabright screen and possibly another 512MB and get a scorching notebook for under $800

wow. this would be flaming hot if it was 1GB RAM and DVD burner at the same price.
although they're pretty thoughtful there of using one 512 DIMM so you dont have to replace 2 modules, you can simply add another 512 for 1GB

The TrueBright's already added, and since it's a single DIMM you're better off just buying another DIMM at the egg or something, and it also comes with the bigger battery, so definitely  to this deal!

tax makes this deal a bust for me.

Ditto. Stupid Dell has a farking kiosk in one of the malls in PA. That means they have a "presence" in PA and thus charge tax.

great deal on a great notebook. i got an E1705 a few weeks back for $1410 after $650 off (1.66ghz, 120gb, 1gRAM, x1400, WUXGA, bigger battery), and it's really freaking sweet. my only recommendation is to reformat it with an OEM version of Media Center'05 (if you have one -- i happen to run MCE on my desktop too) so it gets wiped totally clean of all the crap that comes preinstalled. my laptop runs *significantly* faster now that it's been wiped clean.

Not quite. ExpressCard is the format that will replace PC Card/PCMCIA. Mfrs can put whatever they want onto an ExpressCard; WiFi, EVDO, storage, etc etc. Just like PCMCIA, only faster

Bit. Ordered on with x1400, 120gb, wsxga+, BT.... under $950 shipped after tax.
Can the x1400 handle the latest games pretty well?
It's not a 7900GT CO like I ordered for my desktop, but I'm sure it'll play some. I liked the x300 I had in my i6000.... I'm sure it's close, maybe a tad better.

Can you add $20 off $150 and $35 off $xxx on top of this if purchsed on eBay? (sorry, never done this before)

How did you manage that?????

x1400 + 120gb + wsxga+ + BT = $1,009 + tax = $1,059.47 shipped.

Are you using another cuopon, plus DPA + fatcash??
That would bring the end price to $972.18 (for me, after tax) but certainly not under $950 shipped being as fatcash takes a while to collect...
