wtf... i thought this was a myth... anyway this is sick... my throat feels sore as hell, im hoarse and i cough up black stuff every half hour or so... this has been going on for 2 days now... this SUCKS... if this persists for much longer i might just take the habit back up to get rid of this annoyance... 😛
but seriously, how much longer can i expect this to go on for?? 🙁

Congrats for quitting the most useless addiction on earth. Now please tell all the people at my job that smoke (which is around 85%!!!!!) to quit smoking too so I can go outside the builidng without smelling that crap

Well, I stopped coughing the stuff up after a few months.

But that's good anyway. Means your lungs are moving taht stuff up and out of them. The cilia are working again. Just deal with it and marvel at the amazing grossness of it. Make sure to share with other people.

"Hey! Look at these chunks!"

My neighbor quit smoking. To replace the cigarettes, he started to eat more. He ended up packing on over 30 pounds in a single year, then died of heart attack. Quite sad actually.

i quit after smoking for years.. didnt cough anything up.. does that mean that all that crap is still there?

heh, quitting was one of the easiest things to do.. you just stop.. that's all

It lasts a couple weeks. Your body is rejecting the tar buildup. That's a good thing, because tar won't leave your system unless you cough it up, and I've heard first-hand stories about guys coughing up wads of tar who had quit smoking 20 years earlier. Its no myth.

I havent smoked for almost a year, though I still use nicotine lozenges.

Here is some info about the healing process, google for more.

Some of the negative effects of smoking tobacco include
nicotine dependence;
increased carbon monoxide levels;
increases in heart rate and blood pressure;
increased level of tar in the lungs;
lessened breathing capacity;
fatigue;
chronic upper respiratory problems;
tissue damage from heat exposure in the mouth, throat and lungs;
impotence, emphysema;
and mouth, throat, and lung cancers.

Your risk of developing a smoking related illness is high if you have smoked the equivalent of a pack a day for ten years.
Miraculously, within 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your body will begin healing itself from the effects of smoking! Some of the healing processes that your body may use can be mistaken for illness, such as coughing with lots of phlegm, a sore throat, diarrhea, fatigue, sweating, or irritability. Keep in mind that:

Within 20 minutes, your heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature drops to normal.
Within 8 hours the carbon monoxide level drops to normal.
Within 24 hours, the chances of a heart attack are already decreasing!
Within 48 hours, your smell and taste are enhanced.
Within 2 weeks, your circulation improves and your lung function increases.
During the first year, the cilia regrow in the lungs and reduce problems with upper respiratory infections.
At 5 years, the lung cancer death rate drops.
At 10 years, the lung cancer death rate for the average smoker drops to almost the same rate as for non-smokers.

where's nik anyway i haven't seen him online for ages... 😕

PS - THANKS FOR ALL THE SUPPORT! 🙂

i made a pact with my dad and we both quit at the same time on Dec 31st last year... i guess we keep eachother going so that's how I'm doin it... althoug cravings are all but gone by now (except when im out at night...grrrr) 😀

Your respiratory tract is lined by cells that have microvilli (tiny brushlike arms) that wave around and push things up so you can cough them out. Everyday your body makes mucous (phlemn) and it gets pushed up by these microvilli. The mucous traps bacteria, virii, dust, whatever gets stuck to it. When you smoke, the air you breathe becomes too heated and it destroys the microvilli (and sometimes the cells themselves). So what happens? You can't push this mucous up anymore. Where can the mucous and crud it collects go? Down, into your lungs. So that lovely black stuff you are coughing up is all that crud over the years that couldn't escape, but after several months of healing the microvilli are back in action and clearing your lungs out. Congrats on kicking the habit.

Congrats on quitting. I've never smoked but every former smoker I've known says quitting is the best thing they've ever done. Keep it up! 🙂 :thumbsup:

Er, have you SEEN the pictures of lip/tongue/gum/throat cancer that "chewin tabackey" leads to?!?!?!

Not pretty. You might want to quit too. Well, you probably don't (I certainly misss smoking at times) but it's better in the long run.
