Quieting hard drive noise

In the never ending battle against the noise of the beast, I've pretty effectively quieted everything down except my 2 Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 13.6 gig hard drives.

The 2 obvious fixes would be; replace the drives - can't afford it right now, or, those drive enclosures at quietpc.com - only have one available 5 1/4 bay so thats not really a viable option either.

Any suggestions on a way to muffle/quiet hard drive noise?

Use earplugs.

Put the case in the closet - better yet in the basement.

Go in the closet yourself - better yet go in the basement yourself.

Put a blanket over it.

Put a sock on it.

Unplug 'em.

Deep six 'em.

go to http://www.coolermaster.com they make a good HD cooler/sound dampener. http://www.plycon.com sells them for $29.99.

Saw an interesting method in the forum at overclockers.com where the guy had suspended his HD on rubber bands below the usual mount. Not that I would recommend rubber bands, but strips or reinforced rubber sheeting might work well, preventing the HD from using the case as a sounding board. Not a good idea for a case that gets moved around a lot. Vibration damping material like dynamat or B-Quiet might help, but not much from my personal experience.

Left nut I've only got one available 5 1/4 bay but 2 hard drives so that wouldn't work for me.

Jhhnn, thanks, that gave me some inspiration for something to try. I might wrap the hard drives in something like inner tube material or something similar. To do so I'd have to mount the drives vertically on their sides. Hard drives have any issues running like that?

StanFL, I know that Palo Alto sells a lot of ATCX cases to OEM's like Micron & Dell. This case has a tray for a vertically placed hard drive. I don't think there is any problem with this. My 4-year-old Micron came with a WD hard drive placed vertically like this and I never had a problem.
