I tried SpeedFan, but it didn't seem to do anything (still stayed at about 5500-5000 RPM). Any way I could get it down to about 4000 RPM with SpeedFan or another program?

Get yourself a Silent Boost HSF. Runs VERY quiet and cools well. It has a massive copper heat sink and the fan is a rebadged panaflow that only turns at 2500 rpm. Do a search and you'll find tons of posts on it.

The point is to NOT spend extra money when I already have a semi-cheesy aftermarket HSF (Vantec Aeroflow) that performs very well (40C under load at 1.65V).

7 volt it. Of course, if its a 3 pin fan that will require spending the whopping $3 for a 3 pin to 4 pin adaptor. Maybe someday if you win the lottery you can spend $7 and buy a new 80mm Cooler Master. They are dead quiet at stock speeds (2600RPMs) and they also come with the adaptor if you still want to 7 volt.

Its too bad you didn't get the ThermalTake Smart Fan II. It is 80mm, but it works great and the thermal control is fantastic. I have it thermally control the fan and it never fails...it is usually around 2800-3000rpms since the two quiet 120mm fans in the case keep the CPU temp around 100 F in my overclocked (to 2.2Ghz) 2500+.

When I was building a replacement PC for a lightning-damaged one, people in here told me how great it works and it does ;)

Try this: swap the ground and rpm wires. I did this accidentally on my motherboard (was soldering a new panaflo tail) and the fan ran @ a lower speed. I couldn't figure out why it was so hot!

Ok, thanks to Beatle for making the one serious attempt at helping. I don't need to hear your people's crap about how I should have bought this\buy this it's only $3 (plus ridiculous shipping probably). I asked about SpeedFan, not manually 7 volting the fan. I could have done that a while ago. I only need to run the fan at about 80% rather than the ~60% from 7 volting. The one feature the NF7-S doesn't have...

I just want an answer to my question, not the 3 people telling me that I need something that I in fact do not need. Please spell Panaflo right next time.

Josedawg, I realize you're in the same boat as Beatle, sorry if I offended you.

Quit crapping on the thread. There's enough idiots around here already. Feel free to keep slinging your e-mud at me, because I won't be responding anymore.

It's so easy to get people going.

I wouldn't have said anything if you hadn't come across as such a pompous a$$ who thinks that anyone here owes you an answer in the exact manner that you wish it come across. God forbid people mention a solution that doesn't fit exactly what you want it to. And I suppose you expect people to be mindreaders and know that you already have a Vantec when there's no mention of it in your original post. And no, I'm not going to click on your sig to find out what's in your system.

So once again, take the stick out of your rear and go back to the hole from which you came.

Sometimes you have to Pay to Play my man. To quiet down my system I went with a monstrous Alpha PAL 8045U and used a quiet Vantec Stealth 80mm fan. You may want to consider laying out more $$$ for new/better gear and just selling your current cooling stuff in the FS/FT forum to recoup what you can.

I went through the help file for SpeedFan and it actually was written in English! Anyway it's working now, and my fan is working less.
