Quieting a HSF...

How would one go about quieting the fan on a heatsink? I recently built a new system, but I wanted better cooling than the AMD HSF could provide, so I bought a Thermalright SK-6+ heatsink with a YS-Tech 32CFM/40dB fan. However, I'm finding this to be too noisy.

With this heatsink model, the fan does not attatch directly to the heatsink with screws, so I'm suspsecting that a lot of the noise might be coming from vibration? Does anyone have any successful methods that might be useful to dampen noise? Preferrably without cost. I'm building this system for some friends of ours and I'm on a tight budget.

I'm also a little concerened that SVC might have sent me the wrong fan which might be why it seems so noisy. The fan I received looks exactly like this one which is rated at 47dB when I should be getting 40dB!! I built a system a few months ago with a 40dB fan and it did not seem as loud as the fan I have in the system now. The fan I got did get from SVC does not look like the one I should have gotten.

Does anyone know if SVC slaps their logos on YS-tech fans? Or did they send me the wrong one? Sometimes images and the actual product differ slightly, but is that the case here?

Thanks guys!

Andrew

[EDIT: If SVC did not send me the right one, I'm willing to buy another fan that is quieter. What fan would you recommend to go along with this heatsink and still provide good cooling for an 2000+ XP processor?]

People do complain about SVC accidentally sending the wrong products. Personally they have not messed up on any of my orders. I don't think you are going to get decent cooling with out a moderately loud or louder fan because the quiet 60mm fans don't move a lot of air. A Thermalright SK-7 with the $2.50 NMB 80 mm fan should be much better then your current combination. Generally, 25 dBa is quiet for most people. Some people like to look at the amperage though, claiming it is more accurate due to disparities in manufacturer's measuring techniques. I think amperage ratings of 0.1 for 80mm fans is quiet, not sure about other sizes though. I don't really think you can get quiet with a 60mm setup.

Lol, if SVC didn't send you the right one, tell them to send you a replacement. But in any case, like jarsoffart said, the cfms of air moved for noise produced ain't very good for 60mm fans. But since you don't want to spend any money, do the 7 Volt mod.

Oops, I meant if SVC did send me the right fan I'd buy a quieter one.... sorry.

Yep, I emailed SVC already and told them to send out a replacement.
Thanks for that informational link. I'll put the replacement fan in and try that mod and see if it's much better and go from there.

Thanks for the replies so far!
