Here's what I ordered:

Antech P150 case
A64 X2 4400+
eVGA 7600GS 256MB (fanless)
Scythe Ninja HS (hope to run passively without a fan)
WD SATA2 16MB WD2500KS HD
Nexas Silent 92mm fan (for front intake)
Zalman NB HS (to replace the NB fan)

Depending on the noise, I may not have all 3 fans (PSU, rear 120mm, front 92mm) going at once.

Buy a fan controller, and a Samsung Spinpoint would have been better for an HDD.

motherboard?

i think it's kind of risky to run a highend cpu passively. if you had ordered the p180, it features two exhaust, one at the back and one at the top; the cooling might be a little better than the p150.

you said stability is important for you. that's why i recomended the tyan motherboard earlier. tyan boards are known to be used in server boxes where stability is a priority.

where are you odering the p150? the p150 from newegg comes with a PSU already.

If you're undervolting the fans then the loudest thing is going to be the hard drive. It'll be a nice sytem and no mistake.

Well, the P180 wouldn't fit in his desk cabinet space, so I decided on the P150. I've seen that the PSU that comes with the P150 is fairly quiet, but problematic with particular boards. I'll try it and see how it works, but I ordered a Fortron PSU just in case.

I had alreay ordered yesterday before the Tyan MB recommendation.

In reality, he's wanting to upgrade all his office systems (4 total). While they may not all use a dual core CPU, the motherboard chipsets and graphics cards will likely be the same on all of them to make deploying the OS and programs easier using TrueImage.

As his system is the first one, he knows that there may be some things that need to be tweaked (quieter HD, better cooling with quieter fans). If that's the situation, then the louder hardware will simply be given to someone else who isn't so sensitive.

consider a quadro or firegl if it's a heavy cad machine.

so what motherboard are you going with? (edit: didn't see your update. maybe you can use the msi board on a different box and get a tyan board for the cad box.)

as for the rest of the boxes, you can probably get a motherboard with onboard video. there's no reason for spending money on a video card when they're not going to be gaming.

EDIT: have you considered a dell for the rest of the client computers? they're usually cheaper than you can build. :)

While all the systems are CAD workstations, it's not even close to needing high-end video cards specifically for CAD. It's just simple 2D structral designs. As such, they really don't upgrade very often. To give you an idea, 3 of the 4 systems they have now are P3 1Ghz boxes with 512MB of RAM and a GF2 32MB video card running W2K Pro. For simple drafting, Internet, and MS Office, they still work fine.

I know he's going to be running dual monitors, and at one point, was considering getting a 24" widescreen LCD. It's for those reasons, plus the fact that this card might not be updated for a while, to get a midrange video card now versus onboard video.

I ended up getting the MSI Neo4 NF4 board with the plan to replace the NB fan with the Zalman HS. Thanks for the Tyan suggestion BTW....depending on this first build goes, it may be worth it to switch to it.
