I'm late to this thread but the quietest rig I've found was ordering a fanless Alpha PAL 6035 and a 60mm Panaflo L1A from separate vendors. It is quiet enought that the other 80mm case fans now make the most noise even though I'm running them at 7 volts.
Hey StanFL you're selling yourself short with the Panaflo fan the Sanyo has the same 24db noise level but it has 5 more cfm.. oh well it is about 5 dollars more..
Actually Phunktion the cfm wasn't really a factor for me. I've lost interest in overclocking (been there done that enough) and am happy with the cpu speed. I was seeking the ever so elusive pc quietness 🙂
You should look at the new Thermaltake fan. It's called the VolcanoII and can be found @ www.sidewindercomputers.com . I haven't actually heard the fan itself, but the specs say it pushes about 36 CFM @only 31 dB! This is only 2CFM less than the fop 38, but it is 15 whole dB lower! you can check out a review of it here, http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/cooling/volcano2/1.htm
Okay, I think my rage has passed. I put a 100ohm resistor on the pep fan and now it's nice and quiet, barely okay temp. Now I'm really noticing my hd noise. I posted a thread about that here link
