Does anyone know of a keyboard that doesn't make an excessive amount of noise when typing? How do I explain this...I guess like a laptop keyboard. It is much quieter than a conventional keyboard. You don't hear the loud pecking noise when hitting a key. The sound is somewhat muffled. I have one made by IBM, but they no longer sell it. All of the others (logitech/microsoft) that I have checked out in the stores (best buy and the like)are very loud. Does anyone have a quiet keyboard? What kind is it?

The quietest keyboard, I have ever used is IBM keyboard.
I think they still sell those.
IBM Preffered Keyboard and IBM Rapid Access III.

I don't use any quiet keyboard anymore. I prefer mechanical keyboard
that's making a lot of clicking noise.

But seriously, I use a Dell QuietKey keyboard...VERY quiet...i dunno if you can get it w/o buying a dell computer tho.

Also...if you do, make sure you get the current model...that is, they have an older QuietKey model that isnt quiet at all.

I have the old Dell quietkey that came with my old comp. It is soooo loud. I agree though, the IBM that I have is great. Anyone know where to get one for around $20?

Funny... I have a coupla old IBM PS/2 keyboards that I love... Old clickey ones. :)

Seriously, I was just at Fry's yesterday and they had a mini keyboard that actually IS a laptop keyboard wired for desktop use. Might wanna check into that... (Sorry, no specs. I wasn't interested in it for other than curiosity reasons.)

Old IBM 101 Keyboard are clicky since it's mechanical keyboard. The newer IBM keyboard use a membrane which is why it's quiet.

I prefer a mechanical one though.
I currently use Avant Stellar keyboard.
It's the best in my opinions and it has
24 programmable function key and you could
also program the rest of the key.

Here is a refurbished 104 key Quiet-Key Dell keyboard for $14.95, they also still have free shipping.

Edit: I don't know if the free shipping works with refurbished stuff

No fry's near me. (NY) :(

Why do you guys prefer mechanical keyboards? Just wondering...doesn't the clicking annoy the poeple around you?

BTW I found the IBM Preferred keyboard for $30 on Outpost.com...a bit pricey, but i'll keep looking.

I have an IBM Active Response keyboard and it is pretty quiet, especially compared to my old Gateway keyboard; however, the IBM kb sounds very loud after I've been using the keyboard on my laptop for awhile. laptop keyboards are much quieter than normal keyboards.

Those Rocketboards that were given out free last year are fairly quiet (made by Monterey), and current IBMs are actually NMBs.

84-key IBM AT click keyboards are silent when not used (enough reason to keep them).

this is why many prefer mechanical keyboards:

Mechanical keyboards provide a certain amount of "tactile" response while typing. This is usually most noticed by touch typists and other professionals who do a lot of keyboarding. I personally like the response of a healthy CLICK while I type.

Membrane type keyboards do not provide this tactile response. (but they are far more likely to survive a cup of coffee spilled on them)

Just remember this, most keyboards are designed to last approximately 2 years. Most professional typists find that they need a replacement after about 6 months. I have been using the same P.O.S. for the last 5 years... (thus the reason that mine no longer clicks)
Edit: it clunks...
