Quiet HSF?

I'm looking for a very quiet fan coupled with a heatsink for my athlon XP 2100+. I am reletively new to the forums and am sorry if this question is repetitive or something is wrong with it. Just my computer runs sooooo loud and I would like to get it under control.

Welcome at AT! 🙂

I would consider a Thermalright SLK-900, SLK-800, SLK-700, SK-7 (depending on your cooling tolerances and how much you want to spend) coupled with a quiet 80mm fan (Panaflow L1A, YStech adjustable, Vantec Stealth).

The SK-7 is an excellent copper heatsink that can be had for $20 at SVC

Actually If you're gearing yourself up for performance, Than get an AX-7 + Quiet fan (i.e. Zalman 80mm, Panaflo L1a, Papst..etc). A 'hybrid' heatsink will outperform all copper heatsinks (with a quiet/low cfm fan) because since there is less air being pushed through the fins, you would need to release heat as quickly as possible. Aluminum releases heat faster than copper, and is known to perform better in *most* situations with a LOW cfm fan.

For the money the AX-7 is great, but it has been shown quite well that the all-copper SLK-800 and SLK-900 outperform it. The SK-7 and AX-7 are about even...depends on the fans they use in the reviews.

Go with the ax7 & a panaflo for a quiet and relatively cheap solution.
I recently "silenced" a friends computer and this was the HSF i used.
His was an athlon 1.4, hotter than your 2100+ will probably get... and his is low 50's at load.

To add to Dragon's question:

I have an existing XP 1900+ with the stock AMD cooler. I want to ged rid of the this cooler and use a Thermalright.

Is it very hard to remount a HSF combination on my existing XP 1900???

Thanks

Y

at silentpcreview, they tested the slk-800 and the ax-7 with a fan with various airflow.

the slk-800 easily beat all the other heatsinks, including the ax-7, EXCEPT when the airflow was under 10cfm. in that specific case the ax-7 beat the slk-800.

but at 10cfm, the temps were very high and not recommended.
