Quiet CPU fan for Thunderbird 1.1 Ghz

wyvrn

As title states, have a Tbird 1.1 Ghz system and the cpu cooler is too loud. I cheaped out and bought a coolermaster hs/f, that while cooling sufficiently, sounds like a jet engine. I am looking for something that cools well enough and also produces significantly less noise. I don't want to spend more than $20-25, if possible. And I don't ever plan to overclock, stability is my main concern with this box .

Also on a related note, my 7200 rpm drive makes its fair share of noise. What is the best way to quite this down? I remember seeing a HD "cover" that promised to lower noise and act as a heat sink for the drive, but I cannot find it anymore. Right now the intake fan blows air across the hard drive to keep it cool.

Try peeling back the sticker of the fan on your heatsink, brushing off any crap you see, and add a drop of grease/motor oil/vegetable oil in there, spin it around, and put the sticker back on. If it doesn't quiet down, then a Thermaltake Volcano II will do the job. Rated up to 1.5GHz on Thunderbirds, and it's running in my system right now. It's pretty quiet.

As for the hard drive... Text

<< assuming its a socket a, try a svc gc-68 from case-mod.com >>

That is exactly what I was looking for, thanks 🙂

Ok that is what I was looking for but too expensive. Think I might try designing my own system though if I cannot find one.

wow, that GC68 is 'on sale' for $12.99 right now at case-mod...nice price!

A question I have about it is...is the fan on it pretty quiet? edit: duh, nevermind, I actually LOOKED at the product page this time and noticed that the dba is listed right there! I'm looking to get my PC as quiet as possible. I have some spare Panaflo L1A's, so I could replace the fan that comes on it with one of those, but my only concern there is, the L1A's are only 2-wire fans, so I lose my ability to monitor the fan then.

Zalman makes a line of fanless "flower coolers" that may suit you needs well. These HS's do the job without fans but you'll need at least some airflow through your case. ECC RAM and Win2K will help greatly with stability. Of course, there is always H2O cooling...

I have one of these gc-68's running on my 1.2 duron. It's a great hsf. koni, the fan does come with the hs. It's a 28dba 2500rpm fan. Pretty quiet, and it keeps my chip at 37C @full load. I did lap it. I'm not oc'ing at all.

I have some of the L1a's in the case, and the gc68 fan really isn't that much louder than them.
