First off, is it even worth it right now to upgrade from my 1950xt? (I game a lot)
Considering that my video card is the system's weak spot.

I'm looking at the HD3870 and 8800GT cards in particular...

The card I have is a PowerColor card with a factory Accelero cooler on it... Which I love because it is basically silent.
It drives me crazy having a noisy pc when I'm trying to do homework or read web pages.

Any quiet cards out there?

Would you recommend the ATI or the Nvidia card? why?

The ECS 8800GT with Accelero S1 might be perfect for you

Also to know if its worth it, it would help to know the specs of your rig.

I like the look of that MSI card. I've had good luck with them in the past....

Any 3870 comparables?

Or should I avoid ATI(amd) with their current gen. hardware?

I do not see why everyone thinks zalman's are quiet. At full speed are loud and at low speed they are quit and only cools as good as stock or at best a little better. (This was on a 7800GT). I have the same card as the OP and it is silent compared to the Zalman VF900-Cu. Just my opinion.

I can confirm the ECS 8800GT with the Accelero S1 is silent with or without the turbo module. I couldn't hear it with the case cover off, and I certainly can't hear it with the cover installed.

Cools amazingly well too. Word of warning: the PowerMizer stuff is enabled, but I've never seen the card clock down from 650 core/950 memory/1650 shader clocks. Ever.
