Quiet 50 mm fans?

lumbus

Member
I have an old AMD Athlon slot A computer that sounds like a garbage truck. I would like to replace the two 50 mm fans on the heatsink with something as quiet as possible. I think they current ones are 10 mm thick. Any recommendations?

Thanks!!

This is what Zepper uses on a Socket A rig. Others agree it is a fine solution. Don't mess with fooling around with fans when one this good is so inexpensive.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835150023 You might find it cheaper on eBay but shipping would take longer and with no warrenty, why fight to save $5. Some of the silly reviews at the Egg would indicate improper installation.

This is a review of this dated but VG HSF (thank Kiwi for posting it)

A quiet 50mm is NOT going to get it. The 80mm on this HS will offer excellent cooling and very low noise. ENJOY!!

I would PM you, but you don't offer that option ATM.

You sir are an assclown=very rude. This guy might be young and/or very new and you go for the cheap shot first thing. *shakes head*

Slot A, not Socket A.

OP, at 1 for a $1 or 10 for $8 you can't go wrong.

(I knew people would think socket A, that's why I made "slot" bold. 😉 )

Thanks! I actually saw that, but I've not had much luck buying "random" fans before, noise wise, so that's why I wanted to see if anybody had any personal experiences with specific fans. That one says 28 dBA, which I guess would be ok... Problem is it seems to mean different things to different manufacturers.

Directron also has this one: http://store.yahoo.com/directron/ec5010m05ca.html
It says <23 dBA. That sounds very good, but I found that fan here:
http://store.yahoo.com/directron/ec5010m05ca.html

According to evercool's spec, all the EC5010M05 fans have the same noise level, regardless of bearing type?! Isn't sleeve bearing usually more quiet than ball bearing, for example? Does this make sense?

Thanks.

PS. Regarding the "upgrade" comment: I have better & newer rigs... But this computer is a low load linux server that just runs mysql databases and similar. I like the idea that it uses less power because it's old and slow, if I could just get rid of the noise.

I once made a decent slot 1 cooler by replacing the standard axial fans with a blower, in my case the Nidec Gamma 28. Nidec makes various versions of each unit with differing RPMs and of course subsequent differing power draw and noise. The ones I used were from Radio Shack and were fairly quiet. They didn't put out much CFM, but it was all concentrated into one roughly 1" square opening. Nidec also makes smaller and larger Gamma series blowers, all available with various specs. They're kinda tough to find, though, and I'm not sure Radio Shack carries them anymore. At least, I can't find it on their web site but BITD I used to just go into one and buy it right off their wall of parts.

Nidec Gamma 28

I took pictures of my creation because it was awesome and ran my Celeron 300A @450MHz, really quiet and nice and cool. I have no idea where the pics are today.

Since I put my 11-D in my mouth, I did some lookin'

Cheap and close to your Evercool. Look over the DC fans at http://www.allelectronics.com/ They have a 50x10 Delta there.

Much better. Look at the 40-70 fans at http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/ He has a Sunnon 50x15 there that looks good. Several others there also. http://www.jab-tech.com/ has the 50x15 Sunnon also.
http://www.svc.com/ Has the 50x15 Sunnon. But they have a 40 to 60 adapter that could be bonded on top of the sink w/silicone adhesive, then a very quiet low flow 60mm used.

Small high speed sleeve fans don't last long. They maybe quieter in the short term but they have a short quiet life, then a not so long noisy one.

High speed would be considered over 3500-4000rpm.

Consider using the 50x15 Sunnon, then putting it on a single rheostat of the proper wattage. Use a rheostat rated at twice fan wattage to be safe. Most mount with a small hole. A Zalman fan mate could be used but they are $5.

Galvanized, you are always criticizing. It's funny that you say the same thing to every one you reply to.

Googer, your in the wrong forum. Post in Forum Issues, link all my nasty threads and suggest I be BANNED. End of story. You'll be rid of me and I'll get more done around here.

EDIT: I got it!! You didn't like my comment about lack of profile. I find it much easyer to
offer buying options if a member does show a location, there should be no real solid reason
for not atleast showing a location. PMing is also very handy.

Sweet. I need to save this thread. I scored another machine for my crack rack, and I'm going to be needing some ol' P3 / Slot 1 / A coolers. The only thing I'm really lacking now is a damn shelving unit to put the machines on.

AMD Slot A processors sell for 0.99¢ on ebay, why not buy a faster one that comes witha better HSF combo?

First of all that wasn't even mean, it was funny. Secondly, the internet is not a nice place. If you let your feels get hurt by some anonymous person on the internet you have issues.

BTW, no need to sign your comments with your name since the forum shows it anyway.

Galvanized,
Thanks for all the links and tips, very helpful! I ended up ordering a few evercool fans from Buy Extras (happened to find a replacement fan that I needed for a graphics card of mine too). I took the HSF package out of the computer last night and measured, and it turns out that the fans are actually 15 mm, although the heatsink has sort of an indentation for them so that they don't stick out much.

Interesting idea. I actually looked at past completed listings, and I saw a few sold for a dollar, with $10 shipping... But they're slower than mine and they don't come with a HSF as far as I can tell. (Mine is 800 MHz.)

Thanks for all other suggestions too. The HSFs at alphanovatech.com look too big. My motherboard is designed in a retarded way with the memory slots very close to the CPU slot... So unless I use a low profile HSF I can't use all the memory slots.

🙂

1GHz (1,000 MHz) with a quality coolermaster heatsink. 8 minutes left!
