Quicktime = PILE?

Is it just me or is Quicktime for windows a steaming turd of a program? It's never seemed to work very well with Windows. Maybe it's just me, but it has a tendancy to crash my explorer. Apple is out to get us me thinks.

Well, I own the Pro version and I have to say it's working very well. Is not as fast as it is in OS X, but it still works pretty damn good.

Oh boy...one of my favorite rants! 😀 Quicktime and RealOne have apparently both been designed for one purpose: to take over your computer in ever way possible! LMAO.

Let's count the ways. 🙂

1) Both put USELESS icons everywhere possible.
Of COURSE we need an icon in our tray notifiying us that You have installed quicktime/realplayer at all times, lest we forget about them. Ditto the icon on the desktop. And what about an icon in the quicklaunch bar too? Yep, better put one there as well.
Has anyone actually launched these programs on their own? I would think if you want to watch a file you have saved, you'd doubleclick on the file and it would open the program it's associated with...
Or click on a link. I don't go "hmmm... I want to watch a real movie! First I'll open realplayer, then open my browser and navigate to a .rm link and click on it! Look at me! I'm a moron!"
Better put a shortcut on the top of the start menu since this is such an *important* program and I'm sure you didn't notice the shortcut on the desktop and the one in the tray. Maybe we'll
even throw some links to our homepage in your IE favorites, because obviously you need to know where our company is...even though you were ALREADY THERE to download the software a minute ago!

2) Both take over every single extension they possibly can have any excuse to take over.
This is so incredibly annoying for those of us that have to do tech support for our family and friends. I mean seriously, are there people out there that use freaking Quicktime to listen to mp3s?
And if so, who are these idiots? Why must they force this on use by default?
I wouldn't be surprised if the next version of qt/rp try taking over all picture file extensions. That's so lame ass.

3) Flashing system tray icons
Alert! Alert! Real.com has changed the text of it's homepage! This is a critical event and all users of our product must be notified immediately!
Of course this only applies if you haven't disabled the stupid startcenter and mostly applies to real and not apple.

4) Purposely tricky default install choices
both do this to some extent with the Mass File Extension Takeover they are set up for by default. They both like to make this not-obvious to Joe average.
Real is especially at fault here. They set up the checkboxes as unchecked, but half ones that ARE checked are hidden at the end of the list, where most people wouldn't take the time to scroll down and look at. This is about as unprofessional as it gets. I'm not sure if they still do this in their latest player or not.

5) Programs set to run on startup
Relates to the flashing taskbar icons. Why would anyone EVER want these programs to run AT ALL TIMES? They are clearly non-critical programs and I'd bet the average user only uses them *maybe* a couple times in a month. I can't even remember the last time I used RP or QT on my home PC it's been so long.

Feel free to add your own.

For the curious, I have the latest QT on my PC and realplayer 5, because it does every single thing that it is required to do just fine. PLAY REAL VIDEO!
Both are ridden of all icons and systemtray stuff, of course. 🙂

lol! Agreed on all fronts!

Quicktime on windows is not half as good as it is on mac. I don't know why its so much slower or buggier but it is not that windows media player or real are any better....

and I definetley think these programs should run like shockwave, invisible and comes up when you need it. Real is the most offensive IMO. At least quicktime isn't spamming 500 ads all the time. It's the most obnoxious video/streaming app! I always try my hardest to avoid installing Realplayer at all costs. If people want me to view RM files, I just say no. I think the whole streaming concept is dumb in many instances anyways. If your gonna download it, well, download it and watch it as many times as you want. The only thing that is good streamed is live feeds or news type stuff. Everything else, I'd rather "save to target"

I just emerged it yesterday. It played everything but my lone realmedia file.

hmm strangely I've never had too much trouble with it. I would never go as far as comparing it to real. but maybe I'm just the lucky one
