QuickTime infects PCs with iTunes

Apple apparently is attempting to remove any shred of good faith it had with its customers. For sometime now Apple has chosen to force end users who wish to install their QuickTime Media Player to also install the iTunes software. As if the only MP3 player in existence is the iPod and every PC owner has one, shame on you Apple.

Visiting the default QuickTime Download Site greets you with only two options:

1. QuickTime 6.5 with iTunes for Win 2000/XP
2. QuickTime 6.5 for Win 98/ME

No big deal right? You figure during installation you will have a choice to NOT install iTunes, wrong. Fine you can't do that, how about using Add/Remove and removing iTunes by itself? Wrong again, Add/Remove only lists one application for removal, QuickTime. The problem doesn't really start to sink in until you try uninstalling QuickTime as a last resort?

Damn, those writers at that site are damn slow. How many months ago has Apple been doing this already???

no kidding. and i'm pretty sure the one time i installed it i could opt out of itunes, obscure as the option was it was there. that was month or so ago.
 
Actually it's the other way around - you can't install itunes without installing QT; you have no say in the matter.
 
It is news to many that you can't remove iTunes if you use the standard install, I also saw not option to opt out of it. He also mentions the standalone install too.

I only see links to standalone quicktime and quicktime alternative, no standalone itunes. Not that I'd use it.

iTunes requires Quicktime to open/play. I guess it uses the audio codecs.

Audio codecs aren't exclusive to Apple; other software (WMP, foobar, winamp) will play music - even apple's format aac, without installing quicktime.

No sh!t Sherlock, since QT is needed for iTunes playback.

However, you can install QT without iTunes.

And why exactly is that, Watson? I mentioned it to make people think. Unfortunately this went over your head and you could only attack, neither occurrance surprising considering you're both an Apple fan and an elite member.

I can think of no legitimate reason for itunes to require quicktime. What I can think of however is brand recognition, which is a very important aspect of big business. What better way for Apple to help gain it, and for free, than to piggyback their malware (quicktime, since it resets file associations without your consent) with their other software? Every time the victim plays a video or music file, they get bombarded with "Apple" and the stupid little apple graphic instead of their PC opening the software they used to have associated with media files.
 
Yeah that was ticking me off. i couldn't find a way to install Quick time without the stupid itunes. So i just didn't install quicktime ever. I'll look again but it defintaly wasn't obvious.
