I'm trying to limit how many programs start up on start up... so how do I get quicktime and Windows messenger (if possible) out of startup without uninstalling them?

Start/Run/msconfig/startup

unfortunately in order to run iTunes... which is required for any use of an iPod you have to have Quicktime installed... otherwise quicktime wouldn't be installed at all.

You also may find quicktime.exe in this directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

If you delete it from here, it should not start up.

How about just going to the Qt preferences menu and unchecking the appropriate box?

I can't check on my system since I am not at home but if you browse the options you will find it.

Excellent suggestion! Under Edit/Preferences is a choice called Quicktime Settings. There are 4 check boxes - uncheck all of 'em and also uncheck QT in MSCONFIG/Startup so it won't load automatically. You can create a shortcut startup for it in the Start Menu and it works fine that way - but only when YOU want it to. 🙂

I've noticed on some machines that removing quicktime from msconfig and the registry doesn't stop it from starting up. It ends up re-adding itself.

To really turn it off, go into the QT options and turn off the tray icon.
