Quicktime 7 HIJACKS mp3 links on web pages

The only way to get it to stop hijacking mp3 links on web pages is to uninstall quicktime. But then I can't play quicktime trailers. I know there is "quicktime alternative" but it won't play newer quicktime content because apple is always changing their codecs.

Is there a way to hack the registry or something to get quicktime 7 to stop hijacking mp3 links?
 
There must be a user option to dissociate MP3 files from Quicktime.. Did you look in the menu user options for quicktime?
 
Yes, I looked at all of the File Associations options. Even if you UNCHECK mp3 files, it will still play mp3 links in quicktime. Clicking on a mp3 file anywhere else plays in winamp (as it should).

I think Apple (CRAPple) did this on purpose.

 
I noticed the same issue this morning with one of my users. She was trying to listen to an .mp3 from a website and to my surprise QT tried playing it.

 
A quick and dirty way (you should not have to do it - but whatever) - uninstall winamp - reinstall - reassociate.

Yes, I unchecked mp3 in quicktime. I also uninstalled and reinstalled winamp and associated mp3 with winamp, and it STILL plays mp3 links in quicktime. What the hell is Apple up to?!?!?!?

Does anyone else have quicktime 7? If you do, click on an mp3 link on a webpage and you will see what I am experiencing.

MP3 is unchecked in MIME settings AND unchecked in File Types.

Is anyone else using quicktime 7? If so, can you please click on an mp3 link on a webpage and see what program opens it?


 
wait a sec.. this is only when you click mp3's from the web? are you using firefox or ie? in firefox i know you can define what to do for each extension type.. it's in the options.. I want to say the same for IE, but can't remember, not sure.

I am using internet explorer. Whenever I click on an mp3 link on a web page, it opens with quicktime. I have tried quicktime settings, winamp settings, windows file type settings, and nothing will let me change it. Is there anywhere in the registry that I can fix this?

Again, is anyone else using quicktime 7 ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? If so, can you please click on an mp3 link on a web page and see what program opens it.

I'm having this problem with Firefox. It looks like even with everything uncheck in the MIME settings, QT is still registering the audio/mpeg type. In Firefox you can go to Tools->Options->Plug-Ins and disable the MP3 plugin. I'm not sure how to do this in IE.
 
I'm not sure about any of this but -

when you click on it, does it open it in Internet Explorer, as in quicktime is like on the website itself, or does it launch the standalone quicktime player?

because i think you may have to do something like right click, download, open with [winamp] in order to open it with winamp instead of just clicking on it.

It opens in internet explorer, it does not launch the player. With quicktime 6, this was no problem. I could click on an mp3 link and it would launch winamp and play the file. With quicktime 7, it HIJACKS MP3 links and nothing can be done about it.


 
Quicktime will also hijack random image formats like PNG. Used to do it all the time on work pc's and caused tons of problems.
 
Uninstall that garbage already. QuickTime's primary purpose isn't to display media, but rather to build & maintain Apple's brand visibility & image. To that end it resets file associations so clueless PC users (99+ % of them) see that godforsaken Apple logo every time they view a video clip or listen to an audio clip. Take a marketing class some time and watch Apple in action. Then take a CS class and learn not to install adware on your PC.
 
I tried QT 7 and it sucked.

For starters everytime I tried to view the HD H.264 videos found at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/ QT 7 would crash and XP would give me an error.

After checking my error logs in XP I found the entry pertaining to this and it always pointed to quicktime.qts.

Uninstalled and reinstalled and the same problem. I did a search for this problem and found other people having the same problem.

Also, embedded wavs on some sites sounded really messed up, all sorts of noise and choppiness which was never present with QT 6.

I also had the same problem with QT 7 hijacking my mp3 file associations and I unchecked them under mime setting and the file types tab and it still wanted to play my mp3 when clicking on them on a site.

The .png plugin was also crashing IE when displaying pages with .png files. I then went in and unchecked all image types under the mime settings. That problem went away.

Even so, I finally gave up up and uninstalled QT7 rebooted then wiped out all Apple and Quicktime folders from my computer.

I then found the QT 6.5.2 standalone installer http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652forwindows.html. I installed that and everything is back to normal.

My QT7 standalone installation was 62 megs when installed which personally I think is insane.

The QT 6.5.2 installation is 2.17 megs on my PC.

Only reason why I upgraded from 6 to 7 is I kept getting the update notification whenever I opened QT and I never had a problem when upgrading QT so I figured why not. I've since turned off the auto notification and unchecked everything under the mime setting except .wav and .mov files.

If you do a search you'll see many MAC and PC users are having problems with QT7.
