Quicklaunch icons and shortcut to desktop on taskbar in XP?

My desktops have Windows 2000 but I just got a new laptop (Thinkpad T60), and it's preloaded with XP Pro. I haven't been able to figure out how to place quicklaunch icons in the taskbar. I have a shortcut to the desktop on the extreme left edge, just right of the start button on my Windows 2000 machines. Can't I do that in XP? I know a shortcut (Windows Key + m), but that's more work. Thanks for any help.

Right click the taskbar and click Toolbars > Quick Launch.

You can drag and drop any shortcuts you need afterwards.
