I posted this in Operating Systems but it didn't get a lot of attention. I still can't find a solution. Anyway, here is the problem, maybe someone knows the fix.

This is my issue; the volume icon in the system tray makes the PC Speaker beep instead of my speakers. To clarify when I click on the volume icon and move the volume slider up or down, instead of my speakers beeping, the PC speaker beeps. I can't find the option to change this anywhere, this is driving me crazy :) Help...

I uninstalled the creative drivers, and reinstalled....this has to be a windows thing :)

Any help is appreciated.

My only guess is that its a windows sound (control panel > sounds.)

I have been through the control panel many times. Doesn't matter what I do...(i.e) uninstall creative drivers, disable sounds, mute PC Speaker...still the same problem. Also when I get new mail, rather then get the ususl WAV file, I get a system beep. Nothing seems to work.

it does it on my computer too... if you don't like the pc speaker, you can always unplug it from the motherboard

brxndxn,

If I unplug it, then I will not be able to hear the volume level adjustments, as well as my new mail notifications....

when playing sounds normally does the sound come from your regular speakers? does the volume control work, and just the beep comes from the internal speaker? or does all sound come from the internal speaker?

Yes, I can play mp3 and so on, just fine.

Yes, just the beeps when I adjust the loudness and the New Mail notification come from the internel speaker.

what happens when you open up your case and disable your internal speakers?

When I adjust the volume loudness I do not get a confirmation beep, and I don't get a New Mail notification (I did try several WAV files in the Sound options)

I didn't read the article, but I'm guessing you had the sound scheme set to "no sounds". I think the only one you need for your volume control is the default beep.

No, the sound scheme was set to windows default, I tried switching it several times, but that didn't fix the problem.

My problem didn't exaclty match the problem in the Knowledge base article, but the fix worked for me.

I don't have any Corel products installed. In fact I havn't installed anything in several days.

The only odd thing I can think of today morning (when the problem occured) is I was surfing the web, and I got a message box from a site, saying "vote for us" or something....I clicked "ok"...I think it made a beep possbily...other then that I didn't do anything our of the ordinary.

Found the culprit.

A few days ago, I installed Nero MIX. Yesterday I noticed that it took over all the music file types, so I opened it up and in the prefrences, deselected all the file types. This caused the null value in the registry.
