Seconded.

I completely tore my ACL and MCL in a sports-related injury, and the physical therapist (of one of the best sports medicine facilities in the country) had me using an exercise bike pre- and post-surgery.

You can swim without using your legs. Combine high protein with everything else I said and you will be fine. Also when you do weights, try and do high intensity. More reps/sets with less rest. You will hit your muscles more and keep your heartrate at a good level too, which will boost your metabolism even more. Also, if your knee allows it, try walking, if you can walk for 45 min then that's all the cardio you really need.

It's true, one of the guys I know at the gym just recently had a joint surgery on his knee. His doc still recommended for him that he come into the gym, he does special leg exercises on the cable machine (usually working is hamstrings etc) and does cardio on the bike.

Swim. Be careful, though. You can screw yourself up swimming, something you don't hear too much about unfortunately. I was an avid runner and eventually developed a problem in my foot. I saw a doctor at a sports clinic and an assistant there told me that while my foot was healing I should swim. I did, and tried getting back to running when the foot pain had subsided but it flared up again real fast so I kept swimming. I was very gung ho in the pool and after 10 years I developed shoulder pain that forced me out of the pool. It's never totally gone away and I no longer swim. I went to an orthopedic medical clinic and they eventually did an arthroscopy on the shoulder and found and repaired a labrum tear. I'm back in the weight room and improving steadily if slowly, but I get my aerobic otherwise - not on the track or in the pool. I know if I tried to swim the way I used to I'd tear myself up. I was a terror in the pool.

I tore my quad about a year ago, had surgery about 9 months ago but I still get pains. I'm going for private treatment as the NHS waiting list is like 9 months or something.

2moro i'll buy some protien drinks and weights and try a 45 minute walk a day. I'm by no means fat and Im quite tonned but I'd like to feel and be a little more sharp on the edges. Before my quad f*cked up i used to run miles and miles (about 20 in the space of 2 days). Since then I'v been injured and maybe its my cider which has gave me a slight tummy.

At my old gym they had a cardio machine that worked the arms instead of the legs. It was pretty tiring so should get your metabolism moving.
