how do I close a program running in the taskbar that doesn't show up in the task manager?

You try right-clicking on the program in the taskbar and select "close"?

if that doesn't work, go to the processes tab in the task manager and kill the process

Alt-F4 also works. I hate some of those new popup ads that come up without a title bar (which means no "close" to click on), and somehow they prevent you from closing them by right-clicking on the taskbar. Fortunately I always have Alt-F4 handy.

Of course, if all else fails, like bigben says there's always the task manager.
