People often say that it's best to do a fresh install but I would say that if your current OS works OK and you don't mind the extra bloat from what's not deleted in the upgrade, the upgrade route works fine. I personally went the upgrade route and had no trouble what so ever. This is a brand new OS and it's been refined through several previous Win9x renditions. I think they have the upgrade routine down pat. XP is such a departure from previous Win9x OS anyway that everything is basically replaced and the only thing thats kept are the various custom settings you have in your current OS...go for it!
