Quick X-Fi Question

What are the extra features worth to you? Since there is no comparable product, that's the only question that can be asked in return.

Is the price jump from the base X-Fi to the Fatal1ty worth the more expensive card?
No. The X-RAM appears to be nothing more than a gimmick, even in games like BF2 that allegedly take advantage of it.

The X-ram may be a bit of a gimmick especially at the moment, however there is also the drive bay expansion and remote control.

These are also available without the xram as the platinum version which is a little cheaper.

If your case has a side window you can also see a bright red F for Fatality on the card.

Unless you have money to burn, the question should be is the Platinum worth the money vs the Xtreme Music. If you need the features the Platinum adds, then it is, otherwise no. We don't know what features you will use, only you do.

Thanks guys. Just placed an order for the XremeMusic for $122 which includes tax and 2nd day shipping from MWave.

Looks like there's a $30 MIR at NewEgg also.

The X-Ram is all but useless. I got an XtremeMusic, it's excellent.

you mean all but useful.

For something to be USEful. It has to have a use...

What games use X-RAM? What future games support it??

Answer that!

I agree, even if something comes along that will us x-ram, its 64mb. What can 64mb possibly do for anyone who would think about this card as their system probably has 1-2 gigs of ram and fast cpus and gpus. The premium to go x-ram just aint worth it. I too bought the Xtreme music version and while the headphone surround in games works fairly well I miss my old Audigy 2 ZS. The funtionality of that card was great, especially for music. The Audio Creation mode of the X-fi is horrible. The digital delay is no match to the Audigy ZS version. I wish CL would upgrade the SW for the damn X-fi. I miss the echo-two tap that the ZS and previous cards had.

Yes the additional RAM is overpriced but that's only part of the rip with the other being the silly drive bay. Approximate best prices du jour (shipped, AR):

$95 Xtreme Music
$142 Platinum (drive bay = $47)
$185 Fatard1ty (62MB RAM = $43)

X-fi will be an easier sell to me as an A2ZS user when bare/OEM versions are widely available with lower pricing and a normal I/O configuration so that additional modules are not required for full connectivity. Then again, if anyone offers an HDMI or DisplayPort equipped mobo or card for 8ch PCM this year that would be most interesting.

Not really worth nitpicking, but some of you need English lessons. Jcmuse is grammatically correct. If you say something is all but useless, you are saying it is everything except useless, meaning that it has uses. I doubt that's what meatfestival was trying to say, so jcmuse's correction is right.

I have both on different computers. Through very high end speakers I can not tell the difference. I do like the drive bay however, mainly for the headphone jack. Is that worth the extra money? Prob not.

"all but useless" is gramatically correct, meaning barely useful.

It all depends on whether it's followed by a noun or adjective. When followed by an adjective, it's an idiom as described above. When followed by a noun, it's an antiquated form of saying "everyone/thing except for."

"No mercy was shown and all but the King were dragged to Lauder Bridge and hanged beneath."

"The author wants to make sure that google is all but useless."

As far as the difference between the X-Fi's, the Platinum drive bay features aren't necessary, but definitely useful. I have the Xtreme, and if I didn't have a separate headphone/volume jack from my speakers I'd hate having my headphones plugged into the back. That's just me.
