you *can* fry a PS/2 port (which *can* fry your motherboard) that way, true your odds of this acutally happening aren't too likely, but it *can* happen
 
I've "hot plugged" PC/2 devices a million billion times, no damage done so far, just my personal experience 🙂
 
It depends on the mainboard. If you want to be safe, turn off the power. The inrush current on some keyboards can fry the port. Intel boards have a fuse that you can replace if you're handy with a soldering iron.

It's kind of like flashing your BIOS with a beta or modbinned BIOS. You place your bets and watch the wheel spin. 🙂
