Quick WinXP Pro HAL Question

picked up a single core processor for a new build i am doing. will the hal that is in my currentl x2 build (rig in sig) work so i can test out the single core unit and exchange heat with the seller?

You don't even need Windows to test out a cpu. Just download Ultimate Boot CD. It has MemTest and Prime95 on it, and doesn't even require an OS. As for your question, my guess is that it will work, but you may also have some weird things happen, also.

i will take a look at that, but if i am going to take my rig apart i want to be able to run it for a few days. i think the hal is the same as there is a hal that covers a lot of combos, i just can't remember which one.....

No, the HAL for a dual-core processor isn't the same as the HAL for a single core. That's why people always end up having problems, when they install a dual-core, until after they've reloaded Windows (or went to the trouble to remove the old HAL, and reinstall the proper one).

how do you figure out how long you have had xp installed for? then i can see what cpu i had in when i did this install.....

That, I don't know the answer to. I know that you can see if you have the dual-core HAL installed by opening up Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), clicking on the Performance tab, and under View>CPU History, it will have "One graph, all CPU's" and "One graph per CPU", if you have it installed.

yep, have that - 2 independent graphs and the options...

Then you have the dual-core HAL installed. Let us know what happens, if you try to run Windows with the single core. I'm interested in whether it will work at all, since it seems that Windows will be trying to assign things to a core that isn't even there.

i need this machine plus i have some medical procedure to go to tomorrow so i think i will just use the boot cd and let it run overnight....sorry

I'm okay with that.😀 I'll try it myself, the next time I mess with my single core system, before I sell my spare dual-core chip.

Going from a SMP HAL to a Uniprocessor HAL is not supported. Going the other way, from UniProc to MultiProc, will work under some circumstances.
