Hi all,

Just make a great deal on a Evo N160 laptop... thing is that it has windows98se installed...
Is there an upgrade path from windows98se to windows2000 (I don't like XP!:p)? Or does windows2000
accepts being upgrading from windows98se??

...thanks

I do not recommend upgrading. It seems like you just got this machine, so why not do a clean instal?

It's better to do a clean install of windows. Just backup any data you want to keep on another hdd or burn it on cd-r if you got a burner. You can do a fresh install with only a upgrade CD but it will prompt you for a full version of windows like 98se. It's just to make sure you have legit rights to using the software.

But you could use a win2k upgrade CD and upgrade your 98se OS if you really wanted. But most people here say's that is not the best way. You could run in to problems with the device drivers or the programs you got installed. I all ways do a fresh install when changing to another OS. It's makes for a more stable system and better proformance.

You're much better off doing a fresh install in the long run. You'll end up with a cleaner system.

If that's not possible, inserting the 2K CD whilst in windows should give you the option to upgrade rather than installing fresh. If you do choose to upgrade, I recommend that you change your filesystem to NTFS at the earliest opportunity.

Thanks for the replys guys... but my question was not about the technical aspect of the thing, it was about the legal aspect!!
Does MS allow a Win98SE user to upgrade to Win2000 with a Win2000 upgrade CD?? Legally?

You won't believe how slow win98se is on this brand new machine... man my old PII266 laptop with win2k is faster!! And that
laptop has all sorts of things installed!!

Well, thanks for the advice, but I still prefer FAT32 for my home PC!! My old stuff really hates NTFS... although I do use NTFS at work and
on special[i/] partition on my home pcs!

It ought to be completely transparent to the applications you run and it's a helluva lot more resilient and secure.
Go on... You know you want to...

Dude, you seriously need to consider getting rid of that old copy of Norton SpeedDisk. ;)

No, really, NTFS is totally transparent to all except the most low level applications (like SpeedDisk and other defragmenters), and you should use it in all situations except where read/write compatibility is needed with Windows 9x or Linux. Otherwise, use NTFS for its advantages in security, scalability, and reliability. There is no speed difference in normal use on normal disks, and NTFS becomes faster than FAT32 as disk size increases.

thanks MrMe that's what I was looking for... I tend to not find things in Microsoft's website!!!

As for the NTFS stuff, just let me say that I have some of my own programs that need FAT... someday I may rewrite them
to use NTFS once I understand how NTFS works....

As for the "How it works" bit, i recommend NTFS any day over FAT32, especially the latest version on XP & .NET OS's.

Read Here if u wanna learn about it.
