Quick, very basic LAN question

OK I've got two computers. One is Win 98SE, the other Win 2k. I've bunged a PCI network card in each, and connected them via a crossed cable. What else needs to be done to make this work?

cheers,

seb

make sure the networking components are installed, may need your CD.
you need to install client for microsoft networks & check file & printer sharing.
sharing your connection is more complicated are you attempting that as well ??

All I want to do is to be able to play red alert 2 🙂 I know nothing about networking... I know that for one thing I need to set the computer Identifications to be the same workgroup, which I can do easily in 98SE but I can't find where in win 2k pro to do this !?

Just call me "stoopid"...

they must be on the same ip. im assuming one of them has the modem. the modem computer will be the server. set the ip to: 192.168.0.1 and 255:255:255:0

the other computer is set to 192.168.0.x, x being any number except one. lets say.. 5. subnet is the same. set the dns servers ip to 192.168.0.1 and they should talk! be sure to enable guest or some level access to see files.

For win2k network identification, right click on my computer, go to properties, click on network identification.

Thanks RustyNale & Hard_Boiled. I'd figured both of those out by now 😀 Just been annihilating my housemate at Red Alert 2 for the last 4 hours!
