does using a USB1 device on a USB2 chain drag the USB2 devices down to USB1 speeds?

No, they are two diffrent standards. USB 2.0 is backwards compatable with USB 1.1, however they are diffrent standards. Therefore in order for a USB 2.0 device to work it has to use the 2.0 standard. And if you have have 1.1 device it has to use a diffrent standard. Since most USB 2.0 devices are not 1.1 compatable I don't think they would slow it down as they are seperate standards.

Your statement is a little confusing...you say that 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.1, but then you go on to say that 2.0 is not 1.1 compatible. I think you may want to make that a little clearer to avoid confusion. FWIW, 2.0 devices ARE 1.1 compatible, they will simply run at 1.1 speeds. As far as having both on the same hub, I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that one.

If you have a 1.1 hub, everything drops down. If you have a 2.0 hub everything runs at its rated speed.

as far as i know, having a 1.1 device does not interfere with the other devices' speed, except for the bandwidth that 1.1 device takes up.

if it is a separate pci card, it is most likely based on the NEC chip which has 3 usb controllers in it, two usb 1.1 and one usb 2.0, so it doesnt matter. the card will auto-negotiate which controller drives the device =)

anyhoo... hey Lucky, ltns...
