Okay, we have an old Compaq ProLiant ML370 server here. I wanted to throw a 2nd CPU into it, (P3-1Ghz). Compaq/HP sells the processor "upgrade package" for a lot of money, well over $1000. Even retail stores online sell this thing for $600 or more. Will a server like this work with a standard OEM Pentium 3, or do I seriously have to buy this overpriced crap to upgrade it? The server appears to be Slot 1.

What's the part number for that upgrade kit? The upgrade kit includes the CPU and the VRM module you need. Also the CPU they give you will be matched for the CPU that is in there now guaranteeing that they will work together. Compaq servers are very particular to the CPUs you put in there.

There's a good chance that it will work fine, but like mikecel79 said, Proliants are kinda particular about their CPU's.
We got a Xeon straight from Compaq once, wouldn't work until we upgraded the BIOS.
But generally I think your biggest concern should be potential proprietary HSF's.
