Question Quick Rec on 2 TB SATA SSD please

These forums are still where I come for good advice on computer hardware, even if I'm not system building like I used to.

I'm getting my son a 2TB SATA SSD for Christmas. It will just be storage for his ever accumulating pile of PC games. There's an NVME SSD for the OS etc.

What are a few reliable brands that are affordable with good performance?

(Also, just learned that AnandTech is no longer publishing today... Saddened. It was such an amazing site.)

AFAIK every brand produces some rubbish and *maybe* some good stuff, so it's not so much about the brand as it is the model of drive.

When you say "storage for PC games", do you mean that the games will be loaded from this SSD you want to purchase, or do you mean something else like where games are backed up to when not in use, install files, etc?

What's your son's PC capable of handling, M.2? SATA? Is the M.2 slot gen3/4/5?

Only SATA. NVEM is taken by the OS drive. Games will be dowloaded and played from this drive.

I find that Pc Part Picker is a great place to find prices on lots of stuff quickly. And there are lots of reviews as well, plus links to each store so you can check reviews there as well. Here is the link for a 2TB SATA SSD sorted by lowest price.

Since this is SATA you are going to see the same speed regardless of vendor or price. So I'd just pick one of the cheaper drives that gets good reviews from several stores.

I've used Samsung 870 EVO SSDs a tonne of times without issues, DRAM cache -equipped TLC drives so they'll happily max out SATA until the cows come home, in my experience. That series tops out at 2TB.
