Quick ram question

Ok, I'm only posting this to OT because I have to leave in 10 minutes to my GF's place.. She has an i845pe motherboard with 256mb of ram (DDR333).. I have 256mb of older ddr ram- will adding the ram help or would mixing the memory really slow things down?

If you ram is slower (DDR 266 or whatever), it will probably slow things down. Find out what FSB the CPU is running at, and try not to use anything slower than that. Wrong forum.

256 is enough for just about anything other than gaming or media editing... just leave the faster stuff in there.

wait r u really trying to tell him 512 of 2100 is slower than 256 of 2700??? what are you people on??? I have done this and the 512 is much better i thought...things seemed a little bit peppier at least when it came to copying images and laoding certain progs...

I'm not trying to tell him, I am telling him... 256 MB of PC2700 is faster than 512 MB of PC2100 in most cases. The ONLY time 512 will be faster is if you have programs open that are using more than 256. And lets see here... I have AIM open, Yahoo Messenger open, two IE broswer windows, Outlook express, SETI@Home, and Norton Anti-virus all running... my commit charge is 200 MB. Now I opened MS Word... 206... lets open a few more broswer windows... Now I have 6 broswer windows and Paint open... and I'm at 247 MB... so... NO... 512 MB of PC2100 will not be faster than 256 MB of PC2700 for general use... if you play games, yes, you'll need more.
