Quick: Radeon 9800 XT. Good?

I'm looking at an auction that is about to end for a radeon 9800 XT 256MB for a relatively good price. I'm wondering if i should buy it. I dont game a lot, but my 9600 256MB cant do 1600 x 1200 for games. Would the 9800XT be sufficient? or should i buy something better like a 6800? how does the X1600 Pro 256MB compare to the 9800XT?

Thanx

It was a great card for it's day, but it's getting distinctly old. Unless you're picking it up for next to nothing i wouldn't bother.

Thanx for the replies. Games i have installed are: BF2, HL2, Battlefront, City of Heroes, BFV.

What do you suggest i get then? I just dont want to spend too much because i really dont play very often. I dont need all graphics options set to max either.

Not good to play at 1600x1200, it's maybe 1024x768 for games up to 2 years ago, 800x600 low-med settings for newer games.

You need PCI-E, a fast CPU, and 7900GTX in SLI or corssfire X1900XTX to play Oblivion at 1600x1200, and a single 1900XT or 7900GT to play some other recent games.

Click the Video tab to read about different cards. You might be able to use a 7800GS or X1800 / X800 card. Or even a 6xxx card if you are willing to play at 1024x768.

dayam oblivion has wayyy too much needs for a game :\ yeah but my 7900GT's overclocked does it nicely, at settings maxed at 1680x1050 :]

how much difference would there be from the 9600 to the 9800XT? I can actually play battlefield 2 with the setup i have now and full resolution, it is slightly slow though (only very) and most graphics options are at medium. That was with opera, msn, itunes, av, etc.. running in the background. (btw: cpu and ram arnt a problem). I really dont care too much for all the texture and other settings (thats how rarely i play, im also saving money for a laptop).

Ok, i guess i wont be buying it. Goes out in 1 hr. Thanx for the help.

how is the GeForce 6800 XT 128MB? do i need 256MB at least?
Or
nVidia GeForce 6800 512MB. Im really not willing to go over the price of this card

=\ 6800 was last years card and i wouldn't use it to play anything that came out after it. esp not today's games. i'd get something like the x1600 series if you're on a tight budget

the x1600 Pro 256MB/512MB (will the extra 256mb make a difference (significant)) is well within my budget. is it really better than the 6800?

Well it seems that you are stuck on agp so your choices are quite limited. Looking at that site I'd have to say go for the X1600pro. I have the card and it works quite nicely. It's like 30% faster around than a 9600xt? I'm not sure might be even faster heh. The 6800 series is faster than the X1600pro but the 128mb seems very limiting and the 512mb one is a useless extra 256mb memory AND it's crippled by the 270mhz ddr not even ddr2... Maybe it's just me but that cripples it if I'm not mistaken. Also the X1600pro can be found pretty cheap. Unless you are going to just buy an X850XT PE for agp or 7800gs just get the X1600pro.

i think the x1600 pro would be better than my old 6800NU. that card couldn't even handle source at low settings.. with a p4 3.2@ 3.5 system

there must've been something wrong with your 6800NU, because i'm playing HL2 at 1280x1024 at medium/high settings and I'm playing just fine. Mine isn't even overclocked all that much (380c/792m). I also have a p4 1.8.

hmm i'm currently not using it for anything other than solitaire but i'll test it again, it ran 3dmark 05 and 06 fine tho with scores like 4k and 2k respectively... nvndia was always bad at playing games with quality settings on anyways...

for crying out loud, tell us how much the one is on ebay first, it might be worth it. unless its over of course

6800Nu should be equal if not faster than a x1600.
I'm able to play HL2 on my 6600gt (which is slower) at 1280 * 960 16*AF quite alright. or 1024 * 768 with 4* AA and 16* AF.

To all the people who are suggesting 7900s or 1900 cards, and saying that everything else is worthless, seriously not everyone is prepared to blow a ton of money on a video card, and this might be a shock to all of u but u can play all games with a 6200 (although at lower reso and settings)

Although after u had a good card its hard to go back to low reso and settings 😛
My 7800gt has been with me for 1.5 years now, in the form of 6800ultra before.

I think that settles it for the x1600 then, unless someone is willing to ship me a card from the states or something for a cheaper price. Should i get the 512 MB version or just stick to 256MB?. Can the x1600 overclock well (if at all)?

And yes i am stuck with agp. I would love to upgrade, but know the money can be spent on something more useful right now.

The price for the card was approx 25% cheaper than what they seem to go for on ebay.

you can find an x1600pro for under 150 if you look hard, if I can recall I think newegg has it for 130.

monarchcomputer.com has an x800pro agp for 150 and newegg.com has an x800 GTO for 155.

x800pro is much stronger than the 6800nu, 6600gt and the x1600pro

Overclocking through CCC or ATiTool is okay, but nothing outstanding.

As for a 512MB version: 512MB for gaming is only effective on the high-end cards (1900XT(X) or 7x00GTX), because lesser gaming cards are likely to hit core or bandwidth limitations long before >256MB is required.
