This has just got me buffalowed. Are people in Alabama just a bit off? Has word of the Canandian tank spread. What is going on here:

Alabama Activates Tank Unit
Columbus Ledger-Enquirer
July 18, 2002

A day after President Bush's release of a homeland defense strategy calling for the possible domestic use of U.S. military forces, Alabama activated a 300-soldier Army National Guard tank battalion as part of a homeland defense force.
In a statement released Wednesday, Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman said the Ozark, Ala.-based 1st Battalion, 131st Armor "is equipped with modern battle tanks, the M1A1 Abrams" and "will serve in the homeland defense role within the United States."

Siegelman, commander-in-chief of the state's national guard, did not say what role the tank battalion would serve in homeland defense.

In addition to the tank battalion, 200 guardsmen from Special Forces units based in Auburn and Huntsville were activated and "will conduct post-mobilization training and then deploy to undisclosed locations in support of the war on terrorism," Siegelman said.

Siegelman's office forwarded questions about Wednesday's activation to the Alabama National Guard.

Asked if the armored battalion was deploying with its tanks and, if so, what role they would play in a domestic role, Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Robert Horton said: "That can't be discussed. It all will depend on the mission."

Though he said he could not provide specifics, Horton said the activation was not linked to Bush's quest for use of U.S. military forces on the home front.

The deployment will last one to two years, Horton said.

Hmm... a Tank is a little overboard IMO. We are more looking at suicide bombers, not an invasion.

"so we have to detain arabs in camps now just like pearl harbor and the japanese? "

No, but we should work more on education so people like you can read the article and comprehend what is said in it.

"Kirsanow, who was appointed to the commission last year by President George W. Bush, said after the session that he personally doesn't support such camps and the government would never envision them."

It's like the tank battalion story.

Asked if the armored battalion was deploying with its tanks and, if so, what role they would play in a domestic role, Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Robert Horton said: "That can't be discussed. It all will depend on the mission."

It does not say that they Will be activated as an armored unit. Of course it doesn't say that they won't either. There is not enough information to get your panties in a bunch yet though.

Yes, I did.

I am considering to buy our third one. Would USA go on Defcon 2 if I do that?
I believe this would allow Congress to finally pass the "No Canada" legislation that has been pending for so long. We'll extend our borders north from Alaska all the way across the Arctic Circle to New England. I believe the first post-military action will be to take down all of the "Stop" signs printed in French and replace them with English versions.

National Guard units provide security for the state, and can be activated to assist the US Army. Your ANG will be there for you if some riot breaks out, or to help with airport security, or if an 18-wheeler loaded with bombs is headed to your state, or if the Commander In Chief orders them to go kick some ass in the sand.

Wow only 8 posts before the slavery and racism card was dealt in a discussion involving a southern state! Its getting as predictible as the Hitler/Nazi card once was on the usenet.

No that kind of overly aggressive act would cause us to go right to DEFCON 1 and launch a preemptive strike. The Tridents are spinning up missiles as we speak.

I don't think the problem is with the ANG being called up, but the consideration of domestic deployment of tanks when there are no enemy tanks or large vehicles in the nation. Tanks are not for crowd control, nor can they scan your luggage. You do not stake out a suspect and collect information on them while parked outside in a tank all night. Tanks destroy armored vehicles and buildings. I can accept that Alabama wants to call up the NG, but I do not understand why they could not rule out the use of tanks amongst civilians.

Tanks are like compact cars in Alabama. Those are daily drivers. Have you seen the pickup trucks? Now that's impressive.

I hear they've been polishing up the statues of General Lee too. The Yanks better be on their toes; the South's just been looking for an excuse to mobilize. ;)

Tienemen anyone? Anyone? WTH do they need tanks for? I can concede that armed personelle in airports may be a necessity now, but tanks rolling through towns? This after this "office of homeland defense" asked congress to review the law banning martial law? Doesn't anyone else find it disturbing that this office, so recently created is asking for such power over the American People?

Oops. I better rethink my purchase.

DaiShan, why would I worry. I'm a conservative Republican Southerner Baptist minister. I fear nothing, especially my fellow fanatics. We got our eyes on guys with funny foreign sounding names.

At least they've got their eyes on something. The only thing you can see from your current position is the last four inches of your large intestine. ;)

I'm a little surprised to see you post that.
