If I buy a Mac today, and the new version of OS X is released in October - do I get a free upgrade?

No.

If you were to buy a new Mac a week, or 2 before the new version is released, then maybe, but not 8 months out.

Also, the new version could be anywhere from $29 (Snow Leopard) to $129 (Leopard), so you it might not be a huge issue.

If they're smart they'll keep the price ~$50.

There might be a tentative release date for Lion ... at tomorrow's event. At that time they might say from X date on you'll get a free upgrade.

Yea.. I think tomorrow will be all iOS. They'll save the launch date for WWDC probably, but who knows. I've tried out the Dev Preview and it's fairly solid. There are lots of little things that don't work, but overall it's good.. so I wouldn't be surprised if we see it in July/Aug, or an early release like they did with Snow Leopard (although devs weren't too pleased about that).

To compete with what; Windows at ~$100, or Linux at ~$0?

To compete with whether or not people want to pay to upgrade to the new OS or not. My MBP will be almost 1.5 years old at that point. I'm not dropped $100+ to upgrade the OS but maybe I would drop $50.
