I have a friend who just bought a pentax DSLR, and the salesman at the camera store told her that her older lenses wouldn't work on the new one and there is no adapter.

Now I spent a little time on google and some guys said that the old lenses do work with the new DSLR. So I'm confuzed and I was wondering if anyone knew if it would work and if so what adapter is needed or not needed.

Thanks guys and gals!

P.S. I can look up which camera she bought if nessesary (I think)

define "older" - I sure as heck suspect Pentax screw mount lenses wouldn't work. But then I'm showing my age just knowing that "older" Pentaxes had screw mounts.

I'd have to call and ask to be sure, it was my friends fathers lenses for his Pentax... So they could in theory be quiet old.

oh also, the guy at the camera store when he bought it mentioned he didn't recommend using some of the older lenses because of the metal to metal contact between the lens and the camera? something along those lines...he was worried that it would damage the small device that talks to the lens

Yes they will work. I have the *ist DS, along with some very old lenses.
One of the biggest selling points of the Pentax dSLRs are their backwards compatibility with older lenses. They have the best backwards compatibility. It is the only DSLR on the market that can use automatic metering with manual focus lenses.
The screwmount lenses will require an adapter. I got one for around $10. I use it with a 300mm F/4 Super Takumar lens that I got for only $105. The lens are made in the late 1960s! Works great :)
Here's a shot I took with my super takumar
