I'd go for sempy 64 but I think you must have limited options to ask this question. I think depend on which P4 2.8 you talking about here. A few types are faster than XP and a few are slower.

Well my friend is getting a computer and wants me to help him. He doesn't have the money to build one just payments. If they got anything 64bit I am gonna get it instead but I think he is limited to those speeds or slower. Does it depend on what FSB P4 is running at whether it's faster or not? Say a 800mhz P4 would be the better choice vs a 533mhz P4? Sorry if those numbers aren't correct I have been a AMD guy.

The Athlon XPs are comparable in performance to the 533mhz FSB P4s, but lose to the equivalent 800mhz fsb P4s. For instance, an Athlon XP 3200+ is faster than a 533FSB 3.06ghz P4, but both are slower than a 800FSB 3ghz P4. (and the 800FSB 2.8ghz p4 will beat them both a large amount of times)

At this point though, why not go with an Athlon 64, or even a Sempron? Athlon XPs haven't been made for about 2 years, and you can get Athlon 64s and Semprons that would be faster for about the same price as it would cost to buy an Athlon XP now.

Yes fox5 is right, athlon XP's are obsolete, done even go there. The pentium 4's are soon to be obsolete too, if your friends short on cash he might want to wait a month for conroe to come out. Because then, even if conroe is still a tad too expensive, the older socket 775 pentium 4's will be available for extremely cheap prices, especially the dual-core varients. Single core P4's IMO are a rip-off when you look at the pentium D line. Two cores for a little bit more, two cores with speedstep and on a cooler 65nm process.

These P4's will perform the same as the 800mhz ones you refer too, judging by the athlon xp suggestion i assume you mean a northwood P4, todays prescott socket 775 varients are much the same tbh, everyone just hates it because they run hotter hotter (90nm cpu's only) and it didnt deliver any extra performance on release or ever.

both are very obselete

to answer your question though, to me a 2800+ XP is faster than a 2.8 ghz P4 (478)

this is because, my 2500+ XP was faster than my cousins 2.4 ghz P4 w/HT (478)

That's a faster model number though, and most likely a P4 with only a 400mhz or 533mhz fsb. The 800mhz fsb p4s were faster than anything before them, and no athlon xp model ever came out to counter them, athlon 64s did.

Anyhow, I'd say to the original poster, he should get his friend a socket 754 or Am2 Sempron (say 3000+ or higher) or low end Athlon 64, and combine it with a motherboard with integrated graphics and that will be a decent low cost computer. Or add in a good video card and it will ace any games out there, since even a high end sempron or a low end athlon 64 can get well over 60fps in just about any game.

A64 2800+ or socket 754 Sempron 3000+ would be faster than either.

Like Fox said the 800 FSB 2.8 P4 is faster than the XP 3200+ for gaming, geezers like me can remember back to '03 when intel Northwoods became the CPUs to buy until the A64 was released. It was a hard winter and we lost most of the crop, but we survived on canned peaches and jerky.

A 3000+ or 3200+ Venice doesn't cost much over $100, and performs WAYYYYY better than the two options you mentioned. of course, a 64-bit sempron would work as well.

Not sure why he has to be relegated to those options. If he needs to pay via payment plans, then he should get a Dell. Under $500 can net you better than that.

why are you still going for the last generation of processors?

do you have them or do you tend to buy a new one?
