quick question: what happens if I cancel the disk format?

I just built a new system, and I put the win2k disc in there and it is now formatting... but it is taking forever. it's been like 30 minutes and is at 22% (Seagate Cuda 80GB). I just remember there is a utility from Seagate that works on a boot disk and formats and partitions quickly. If I canceled the format job, would it hurt anything?

Will the partitions initialize if it isn't formatted?? I thought it was required after setting up partitions with fdisk.

I may just be talking out my a$$ again. LOL

Just be patient, it will finish soon enough.

Part of the deal when you're setting up a new drive.

I let it finish.... it just took sooo long. I know that if I used their utility it only would've taken few minutes. But alas, I got the system up and running.

P4 1.6a (havent played with it yet)
Asus P4S333
Kingmax PC2700
Seagate Cuda IV 80 GB
Visiontek GTS-V (until Gateway ships the Ti4400 :|)

You could install from a floppy set--might be faster. Format for an 80gig does take a while, tho.

LOL........ you should have seen how long it took to format my 100GB hard drive. ;) Anyone i don't think it'll hurt it if you cancel since it just writes 0s over any existing data.

How long does the windows xp quick format take?
If I remember right my 80 gig was like 2 minutes. Could this be right?
