Quick question...Vista or XP regarding gaming

What OS would be appropriate to put in my PC, which is better in the gaming since?

Hey, I'm building a custom PC and only need a OS for it. This PC will be used primarily for gaming. I have a laptop now, but it can not preform my gaming needs due to its lacking vid-card. I'm mostly going old school and playing CS, CS Source, Americas Army, Team Fortress, and day of defeat.

I'm not sure what OS would be more appropriate...Vista or XP?

I understand XP is known to have a slightly better fps in game than Vista, but is it that noticeable? Also, how much dominance does XP hold over Vista? Is it really worth the extra bucks to purchase XP over Vista? And as far as which XP or Vista....Home or Pro/Premium? Money is kind of a problem...I just would like to buy the OS for the money.

All the help would be much appreciated!!! Thanks!

Yup...I agree. I apologize. Please note this is not the most dominant PC. A big reason for the majority of the parts were prices and saving money and having decent gear to tackle my needs.

CPU=AMD Athlon 64 2.6GHz socket am2
MOBO =Biostar A780G-M2+
MEMORY = 2GB Ballistix Tracer 800MHz
VID CARD = ATI Radeon X1900gt 256MB
HDD = Maxtor Basics 160GB 7200RPM

XP and Vista are generally equal in gaming performance now. You don't have a DX10 card so thats not a factor either. Personally, I'd recommend going with Vista. If you have performance issues then just upgrade to 4GB ram, it can be had for under $50.

I noticed no performance difference in all my games from XP -> Vista64 and Vista64 runs everyday apps faster. I'm glad I got Vista. For the OP, you can pick up an OEM of Vista64 Home Premium @ Newegg for ~$100. You'll want to go at least Home Premium. Yea ram is so cheap, you can get 4GB for $40 and sometimes $25 AR.

Yea, I agree. I think Vista is the way to go. With ya'll saying there no is major noticeable performance issues and Vista being cheaper, I think its the best way to go. Thanks for all your help.

If you already have XP, use that. If you're buying regardless, get Vista.

Yup definitely this.

No point spending anything if you already have a copy of XP you can use, especially with Windows 7 around the corner.

But if you have to buy, then get Vista.

I still play an old game called "Links 2003" golf simulation w/ XP...

Wonder if it will run w/ Vista 64bit...
