$150 CAD (after rebate) on sale for the PowerColor 850MHz 1GB 3.9GHz GDDR5 version.
Is this a good buy at this price point?

What kind of power supply would I need for this (I figure the one which came with my machine, a HP m9250f, would be insufficient..)?

It comes with a 350 watt psu and a Q6700. Sorry but thats not enough.
Best you can do is a hd5750, and that may be pushing it. The good news is the 5750 is much faster then the included 8600gt.

Yeah, I figure I'll need to upgrade the PSU if I get this card (it just so happens a BFG GS 550W one is on sale for $30 :->). I wonder if this is a good buy at this price point? (faster, better, cheaper, lower power recommendations welcome :->)

What is your monitor size or resolution? 1400x900? 1650x1050? 1900x1080?

Yes the bfg psu will run the 4890 easily. It has a 41 amp total 12v rail. For 30$ it's a great buy.

You have 3 post in 10 years? Holy crap thats a new record.

Well, right now it's 1280x1024. But it could be due for an upgrade (some pretty good prices on monitors this boxing day.. although a monitor is something I'll never buy online.. need to see it in action first).

I have many more than 3 posts.. but the forums changed at some point recently? And I guess the old posts are all gone.. probably none of them would be particularly useful/relevant for anyone, anyway.

If your going for a monitor upgrade soon , a 4890 with the BFG power supply is perfect for you at 180$ total. If you want to save some money, you could get a hd4770 and skip the power supply. The hd4770 will still be twice as fast as a 8600gt. 4770's go for about 110$ and don't use much power.
