Hey Guys,

I'm a bit baffled with all this South Bridge stuff.
I am thinking of getting the DFI crossfire x200 with SB450.
Now I know the 600 is coming out and fixes the mistakes on the 450 model but on AnAndtechs article it says its a simple pin in drop.
I quote:

"The good news is that SB600 will fix these somewhat minor failings and is a pin-compatible drop-in for SB450. "

The question I wanted to ask, firstly, where would you purchase the chipset?
Secondly wont there be any problems with just adding a whole new chipset?
Conflicts? Reinstallations? Reconfigurations? Firmware updates?
Can you just replace the southbride...?

Thanks!

No, you can't replace a south-bridge, or not that i've ever heard of. I'd presume they mean that this chipset will be used on new MoBo's, and those MoBo's wont suffer those problems or whatever.

It means that they can change the board at the factory to accept the new southbridges without redesigning the whole motherboard. This means there will be less cost to the consumer to make the changeover. It does not mean you can change it yourself.

Oh Ok!
Thanks guys... much appreciated...

One last question... does one wait for the sb600 or does one make do with the 450... i am making the decision but i am a bit 'tied' between waiting or just going ahead..

opinions?

for the additional info, i am only going for the crossfire because i want to sli both ati cards (x800 gto2 and unlock them using the bios update)
thus getting the performance of the XT... sounds doable..?

or... wait for the sb600 and then do all the above..?

Do you already have the cards? I ask because, in the circumstances, it makes more sense to get a tried-and-true NF4 board and a 7800GTX which will outperform two X800XT's anyway and most likely for less cash.

i'll get the ram and video card for sure.. thanks for that...

in regards to cpu i was going for the 4400 x2 and overclocking that...

before i do wait for this new 'expert' board... can u tell me what i'll benefit from?
i mean the board i was thinking of getting, is it dated or does it have some disadvantages?

well, since will be my next system, we will find out if Corsair works, if not, will just trade it in for ballistix
supposedly a lot of the nf4 ultra probs ahve been fixed
also they say there will be only 2000 mobo made so you might want to keep a close eye on this thing (but I doubt it - why make such a short run)
this will be the ultimate thread on the expert

u reckon i could power the x2 4400, wd 400gig re, 7800gt, and 2 gig ram of your spec on a 450watt psu from antec.

the psu would be the one that comes with the new sonata 2...

heheheh... ok anyone know the answer to that?

amd athlon x2 4400 with 2gb ram, wd400gig re2, dfi board and lastly 7600GT...
all on the antec sonata 2 case which includes a 450wat psu... is that enough juice?

the 7600GT is not SLI'ed... single card only.
