QUICK QUESTION: Pay at Illinois Tollway with Credit Card?

With sadness in my heart, it is once again time for me to leave my SO here in Wisconsin and travel back to Georgia for yet another college semester.

When I came through the first time, driving the Illinois Tollway was such a PAIN!! What I want to know is can I use a credit card to pay for the tolls I drive through.

I don't want to pay online as its almost impossible to remember all the tolls I have to drive through, yet I only have about 15 quarters and 2 dollars in my wallet (Rest of funds are on cards so as to prevent me misplacing money).

My gf as usual has offered to simply give me cash to get through the tolls but in my usual stubborness I'd really rather not unless I have no other option.

So I reiterate. Can I use a credit card to pay at the toll ways on the Illinois Tollway system?

I've always wondered what happens if you don't have the $$. Do you just run it and then call the state later and tell them you were in the tag lane on accident and need to pay the toll? Or do you just stop and smear mud on your license plate prior to the toll booth and drive through the tag lane like that?

In MD they send you a bill. You can get in some trouble if you do it chronically though.

When I was there in January of 08, I noticed that you could pay the tolls online if you happened to miss one. Well that being said, I blew through a few and went to pay online when I got back to NY. After fruitlessly trying to find a way to pay the fines, I just gave up. total $1.80. This June I recieved a summons to court for blowing off the tolls, I sent in a request for a hearing and explained that having never been to the area before and already paying ~$50 in tolls, in three days, I would be more than willing to pay, I just couldn't find a link on their site.

Cost= 61.80 for going through 3 booths.

Take change and add a few extra bucks just to make sure.

I've gone through a toll and simply didn't have any cash or any change on me. Once I pulled up, I simply told them I really didn't have any cash on hand at all, and all I had was my card. They just said OK and let me pass through.

I have gone through a toll booth before, and seen people in other cars filling out some kind of paperwork/form. I assume they're supposed to take your info and send you a bill if you don't have cash.

This is in Maine, btw. Could be different elsewhere.

Thank you for the replies guys. I'll use the combination of my remaining loose cash and a few dollar bills from my gf. I didn't want to bother with an I-PASS since this was the only time I've driven through Illinois.

I drove past one when I came through the first time but paid it online, so I know it exists. There would be no way though to keep track of all the ones I passed through though.

I think a tollbooth would have a higher chance taking a credit card than an out-of-state check

Only once had I forgotten my lil' toll change jar (I used it a lot when I worked for the University of Maine) and I had the same experience.

The lady said "Don't worry about it" and let me go.
