Quick question on New O/S install

I just built my brother a computer, and I'm trying to install windows xp, and it runs the setup up to where it says Setup is starting Windows, and then it just sits there, it doesn't do anything else, goes through the driver installs(SCSI, RAID) and such, but then when it tries to setup windows it doesn't proceed. This computer is all new, the parts are new...any ideas on a on solution.

I don't have another one...just the one that I am installing on this computer, and I'm not going to go buy one...don't have the $$ for taht

I tried to boot the Knoppix liveCD, and it will go to the boot screen, and then when I hit enter, it unzips the .tgz file, and then the screen goes blank...could this be a hard drive problem? It has never asked me to format my harddrive...I swear that it did last time I did an install on a new computer.

clear cmos

IDE or SATA??
XP or XP SP1 or XP SP2??

XP SP2, SATA 80 Gb harddrive, I didn't put a floppy drive on the computer, but I had the memory in my other computer, and it works fine...I think it may have something to do with the harddrive

What he said. I had a similar problem and that fixed it for me.

If you're installing the OS on the SATA drive, you may need to install the SATA driver first before windows will see the drive. Right now its like you're trying to install the OS on a computer with no hard drive, so it hits a certain point and can't proceed.

If you watch closely when its loading files needed for the install it will ask if you need to install any 3rd party RAID drivers etc, then you need to have a fast keyboard finger. I had to do this a few years back when I was trying to install the OS on a drive that was connected to a 3rd party IDE RAID controller card.

I'll check on the RAID controller, but I didn't have to on my other computer. The harddrive shows up in the boot list...I'll try clearing the CMOS as well.

disable the sata raid controller in bios and it should be trated like an IDE drive. just to make sure it's not the sata controller try another IDE HD. good luck.

Thanks, I reset the CMOS button, and now it is working...btw it was always recognizing the HD as an IDE drive...something in that special button set it straight
