Quick question on Best Buy return / exchange policy

I got in on that outrageous BFG 6800 OC / HL2 bundle deal, and the card was working very well till this afternoon, when the computer shut off in the middle of 3dmark2k3 all of a sudden. the card was overclocked to 422/822, but there was no sign of artifacting so i know i didnt push it that far. the computer works fine without the video card and the card failed to work in other computers as well. with the video card in the AGP slot, the computer wouldnt turn on. the power light comes on for like 0.5 sec then it goes off with a very short beep. Upon careful inspection, one of the fans was split in half in the middle. i have not a slightest idea how it happened, just my luck i guess.. right now it is superglued back to one piece.

Here is the problem : BFG is highly regarded for their excellent warranty system, but I am going home on saturday to hand this card to my friend some 7000-8000 miles away from here. the best i could do with BFG warranty is to ask him to wait a month till i get back to school after the winter break and send it to him at an outrageous airmail shipping cost. as much as i would love to find out what BFG warranty is all about, there is not enough time to get the card back before my departure.

Does bestbuy let you return/exchange opened product if you have everything intact including the receipt?

I would be interested to know what you find out... I am this ----><---- close to buying a BFG 6800gt from BB. But am concerned about RMA policy?

I returned an opened/used hard drive to Best Buy (for various reasons) without a problem. I did have to wait for a computer tech to come up to the service desk and inspect the drive to make sure it was the same model listed on the reciept. I have heard of cases were some people had difficulty returning hardware to Best Buy when the hardware shipped with OEM or demo software. Apparently the management assumed the person had only bought/returned the hardware in order to copy the software. They do have a no software refund policy, so you may have to argue a bit...

BTW, does anyone know if CompUSA still has their excellent graphics card extended warranty program? When I lived in a city served by a CompUSA, I knew many overclockers that **LOVED** the policy!

I bought an LCD online that was defective and returned it in-store for a 100% refund, even shipping.

oh sh!t! come to think of it, i cut out the proof of purchase from the box... the rebate didnt say you need the UPC code, but i included that witht he rebate slip just to be on the safe side... they wont take a broken box back, would they? 🙁

Hey, i purchased the BFG 6800 GT from Best Buy and my friend who works there got me a nice discount and i only paid 300 including tax. As far as i know you can return them, as long as you have everything with it. Whenever i get a hold of my friend who works there i will give you an update.

sounds like if i handt cut out the box, it would have worked just fine... would they refuse simply cuz the proof of purchase part is cut out? 🙁

If they won't let you exchange it because of that offer to let them exchange boxes (you keep the box with the cut-out UPC and get the new card while they keep the new box and messed up card).

My experience has been that if you cut the UPC for a rebate, that they will only allow exchanges but not returns (this is stated on the receipt as well). I think you should be fine...even if it means you just trade out the actual card and not the rest of the box's contents.

you hosed the deal when you crazy glued the fan. as soon as they open it they will see the modification and neg you.

just hope they don't inspect the card, otherwise your gonna have to take it up with BFG. they may or may not allow an RMA.

as long as your within the 14 day return policy, they will exchange it outright.. they'd just make you keep the box with the missing UPC, so you couldn't send in a second rebate..

sounds great, here is my last question : if they ask me what happened, would i be better off telling them it stopped working after few hours as it happened in reality, or it didnt work out of the box?

well the guy inspected it and didnt ask anything about the fan. i just told him it exactly like it happened except for the fan part and everything went smoothly except the guy wasnt very friendly. bestbuy return/exchange people arent really the nicest tho, last time i tried without the receipt they suspected me of shrinkwrapping it myself.

the only bad part was the one i had before only had purple capacitors, and the new one has purple ones and green ones 🙁 then again, even if it doesnt unlock $195 is a good deal for 6800NU.
