Quick question. Is it worth upgrading my Altec 251's to Logitech Z-680's?

Circuit City has the 680's for $199. I can get maybe $40-50 off my Altecs. Is it worth it to upgrade?? I use an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum and I listen to lots of MP3's/WMAs and I watch many DVD's on my computer and I game sometimes.

I like my Altec's, but the "hiss" gets annoying sometimes.

get the 680s B and crank'em up :pl

Do they have the optical line? If you use that, you don't have to use the three mini jacks do you?

You can have 5.1 on Dolby encoded / DTS media via the optical. Otherwise its just 2 speakers.

Some Z680's suffer from hissing, do leave a post here if yours does.

What do you mean by otherwise it's just two speakers??

If I use the optical line, I'll have 5.1 in every application as long as the app supports it right?

I'm just a little confused about the optical stuff b/c I've only used the mini jacks for speakers, but my audigy has the optical line.

That audigy only has an optical out from the front ports though, right?

Just checkin :)

Yes, but I have the front ports on my PC so it's no problem.

Well, you can still use the mini-pins and get surround from your card. If you go digital, go optical out from your audigy drive and not the mobo. The 680s actually have a built-in decoder so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Yeah, I recommend buying them. I just bought Creative Gigaworks S700 and man I love them. Heard nothing but good things about the 680s other than hissing when the volume is real low or pretty much muted. Wish I had optical in directly to the speakers for my Xbox, but oh well.

I wonder if anyone can help me. No matter how I hook up my Altec Lansing 251's to my nforce 2, they just don't sound right. The read and center channels produce horribly little volume. I don't understand it. Messing with the sliders in the nforce control panel doesn't seem to do much. The are relatively cheap speakers, but they should work with the nforce2's onboard audio right?

The only way I was able to use all of the speaker inputs was by actually hooking up one of the connections to the microphone port!! I tried all other combinations. Nothing seems right. I know these speakers should sound better than this.
The rear and center channels sound like they aren't even amplified?

Is this some incompatibilty with my nforce or could my amp in the subwoofer be fried? The right and left speakers produce decent volume. The 251's are set to 5.1 audio as well. Tried switching it.. no difference. Too bad I can't try the spdif. No digital inputs on these speakers.

Should I splurge on the Logitech 680's or will I have the same problems with those. Anyone got an Audigy2 they don't want? ;)
