quick question: is a swap file and a paging file the same thing?

i'm reading about them and they are both for virtual memory. does that mean they are two names for the same thing?

Yes they are the same thing. the swaps occur is 'pages' of memory on windows. so its called pagefile sometimes.

Well, its actually more like MS didn't want to call it a swap file because that is what Sun and BSD had already called it. So instead they called it a paging file. Its really pretty much the same thing. I give props to MS though as they added lots of dynamic rescaling of the file while in *NIX (linux, unix, etc), it is a static sized file or partition. You can manually add more swap files to those systems, but like I said, its a manual process.

Ok enough rant/rave, to anwser your question, they are the same thing.

Hey Spanky, just one more thing....How in the WORLD did you make 17528 posts in just under 2 years!!! That is outrageous! I've been here through 3 different versions of this forum (with accounts being completely wiped between the versions...in other words a LONG TIME) and I don't have anywhere near that many posts.
