Quick question bout the dual boot of win2k and 98 come help out

Ok, I am gonna install bot win2k and 98, the way it sounds everyone is using it by installing 98 first then installin 2k. BUT I hear from my friend, that I can install 2k first, install service pack 1 then install 98 and it should work!!! Anyone have any experience with this?? and does it work? well thanks and lmk

dunno, no matter what you do, be reminded that you need to have multiple partitions to pull it off best. install 98 on a fat 32 then win2k on an ntfs, also the win98 wont see any partitioned as ntfs.

If you have 2HD and both of them have active partition on them, you may be able to install win2k and then win98, both on separate drives. But, if you have only 1HD and 1 active partition, you have to install win98 first. If you try to install Win98 after installing Win2k, win98 cannot modify the MBR of win2k and hence you will not be able to install Win98.

Install W9x first.

You don't need a second HDD, but you want at least 2 partitions on the one, if u only have one.

I have a 2nd HDD for W2K, but not necessary.

Cool, but if I have two hard drives, say a 30gig and a 17 gig, and I want 98 on the 17gig and 2k on the 30gig will it automatically dual boot? and does the 30 gig on 2k have to be in fat 32?

Install Win98 on 17GB drive(FAT32) and then from within Win98 install Win2K. If it asks you if you want to upgrade, say NO. Then run setup and you can check the option that says, &quot;I want to be able to choose the partion for Win2K&quot;. Let it do its routine and when prompted for partition, choose the one with 30GB. No it does not have to be in FAT32, you can make it whatever you want. You can also make it a FAT16 as well.

Then you are all set to go.

FYI: You can dual boot 98 and 2k on the same hard-drive with 2 different partitions. Non NTFS for win98 and choice of FAT16/FAT32/NTFS for Win 2000. If I had that big drive, I would install both on same (17GB drive) and use 30GB for my stuff/backup and pagefile. Placing pagefile on second HD increases perfomance and speed if you have <=64MB RAM (like me)

When u install W2K, it'll automatically install the boot loader, which will give u a 30-sec time delay, defaulting to the last OS installed .. if you don't select the other OS.

I think it's best to have both OS'es FAT32, when dual-booting W2K &amp; W9x/ME, cuz then u can x-fer files between the two w/ no prob.

Options:
1. install 2k and 98 on the 30gig
2. install 2k and 98 on the 17 gig
3. install 2k on the 30gig and 98 on the 17 gig

Im kinda leaning towards option 1 and leaving all my personal stuff on the 17 giger

ALSO one more question, how do I get rid of a os on a hdd, i have personal files on the 17 gig and i installed 2k on it a while back to test some things, but now i dont wnat the 2k on it, and i just want my personal files on the 17gig so how do i get rid of the os?

Radboy--That's what my Dad does on his, and he likes it that way. FAT32 on both. I believe NTFS is mainly for added security? Which my Dad doesn't need.

LOL....6 months ago Dad didn't even know what Cat 5 was. Now, he's using my W2K license and has 3 pc's networked. Doesn't know how he lived without the stability of W2K. I still haven't gotten to install it yet.

You don't have to install win98 first. If you already have win2k installed, you can install win98, but then you have to run repair from win2k setup and have it repair the master boot record. I don't remember the exact option, but it found 98 and put it into the boot menu.

BTW, you can install Win98 and Win2K on the same (FAT32) partition. 98 goes in \windows, and 2K goes in \winnt. Only problem is that &quot;\program files&quot; gets mixed up... Therefore I recommend against it.
