just wondering. I know it involves changing the drive firmware rather than doing it in Nero, but I'm not quite sure how.

Got Google??? Use this phrase as well as your burner's make and model no.: "book type setting" . This is ONLY for setting DVD +R media to look like DVD-ROM.

As opposed to what? DVD+R --> DVD-ROM was all I planned on doing.

I also want to bitset my 3500a so that DVD+R -> DVD-ROM to play my home movies on dvd on set top dvd players.

I am confused on the process, so if someone could please explain how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated

well it involves firmware flashing with a hacked fw..you do so at your own risk..google
