Thinking about joining the Bronx YMCA and on their page I only notice programs for children, and a pdf of their gym time listed.

I've heard of gymnasiums banning adults when kids are using the facilities, is this true for the YMCA? Are YMCA facilities a good alternative to a normal gym membership? The real gyms in my area are all oversold.

Or should I try and keep up with running exclusively, which seems to be doing nothing for me at all anymore.

All the YMCAs near me look just like any other gym for the most part; definitely not only for kids. Not sure if that varies by location, though.

I'm going to check them out Monday after work. The entire website (and videos I've found on YouTube) seem very kid oriented. I am not able to find anything for adults at all.

in my experience, ymca is classes for kids and adults can use the facilities when there are no classes in session in that area.

So when kids are taking classes, there is no adult activity allowed? That sucks since I would go there between 4-6PM, when this local Y has afterschool and summer programs.

I have not yet been able to get through on their phone line. :(

YMCA can be used by anyone. Heck, the one's near me have large gym facilities, weight lifting rooms/fitness center and pools. I know a number of folks that lift there b/c it's cheaper than a gym and then they can also swim laps.

That schedule you've posted is for the gymnasium and not the weight room/fitness center. And yes, if a program is going on, you're not going to be allowed to use the gymnasium.

typically there won't be any weight training classes so if that's what you want to do you should be fine. if, however, you're going to use the pool or the gym, chances are there will be classes scheduled at that time.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but they want to tie my bank account to the membership. That scares the crap out of me but they said most gyms do this.

Anyone think this is true?

Most gyms do want a credit card or debit card on file that they can bill regularly. Wouldn't want them tied directly to a bank account number, but tying to a VISA is pretty standard.

used to work at a YMCA. Not just for kids and it's common to them to do a ACH for monthly dues.

My gym doesn't even take credit cards. They wanted a void cheque so they could take the money directly out of my bank account every month. I used to be a member of a YMCA when I was in high school, and this is how my mother paid for my membership then, too. It's common, and they won't steal money from you.

Scares the crap out of me. I am extremely careful of my bank acct. but I liked the local YMCA. It's out of reach to most of the Bronx, and parking isn't much of an issue.

Don't know what I am going to do.

Your fear is irrational, and I'll guess it has more to do with you being scared to start working out than it is that the YMCA will drain your bank account.

You should already know what you're going to do. Make the right decision.

I joined today and bought a few items for working out. :)
Tomorrow will be my first day.
