quick question about windows xp data migration

I am trying to mount a NTFS hdd (which was use as the primary drive on a windows xp system) onto another windows xp system as a secondary drive.

Should I be able to read the files right away? I remember that when reinstalling windows xp over an older winxp installation, you have to take ownership of the folders to be able to read previous content prior to the fresh install. Does it work the same with whole drives?

I don't use any kind of encryption.

I mounted the drive, and winxp detects the hardware correctly but is unable to read anything on the drive. The system just crashes when I attempt to read. Driver manager says the drive is healthy but is unable to display what type of file system it's using.

Would that mean the hdd has gone bad? It refuses to boot (winxp) on its own, and when I try to reinstall windows over, it says that I don't have enough room and only propose the option to reformat (I had about 250MB before the system crashed).

just to be on the safe side...

try mounting that disk in linux. if that works, then your set.

if not, then you are screwed

You should be able to read the drive in explorer with no problems. I don't know why you can't.
