Quick Question about Sennheisers

I will "hopefully" get the HD555's for xmas, if santa is nice 😉. I have never had headphones with open backs(although it is a circumaural design). How much can you hear through the backs?

Nik - I don't care

I have a set of sennheiser HD497's that I've had for more than 5 years now, I've never had anything that I've liked listening to more. period. they are closed back and you can't hear anything out of them. Dunno if that helps any. 🙂

I have the 555s. You can disregard the rest of the post and just go buy them, they fvcking rock. Trust me. No, seriously, stop reading and just forget about it.

Okay fine. They just kind of muffle the noise around you, it's definately not as profound as real noise-canceling phones but the circumaurality does help a little bit.

But these are open back. I am just trying to figure out how loud they are outside of them. I mean, will people in the room be able to hear EVERYthing? Or is it as if I was wearing non-circumaural heaphones with them turned up?

Thanks 🙂

But I am wondering how much people can hear of what I am listening to? Is it loud with the open back??

YGPM

they are open such that the bass doesn't go bouncy in the phone, highs are much better. no wave reflections... in any case, the most trouble is worrying about your music disturbing others. ..

Are you trying to figure out how much of an external noise are you going to hear in your headphones or how much sound headphones leak into the environment? If it's the first you will hear almost everything, every ambient noise. If it's the second it depends on the volume, I can't speak for 555 as I don't own them, but I do own 600 which are also open and at low volume there is no sound leak. If I do turn the volume up to the highest comfortable setting, they sound a lot like a small quiet speaker, I can hear them from 10-12 feet away.

HD497s are open back 😕
I have one myself. They're nice.
You can see holes on the back which indicates that they're open.
Any site with specs will confirm this.

I am talking about sound LEAK. I read on a website that people will hear a tinnier version of what you are hearing. That makes it sound really loud if they can hear what I am hearing. I am just curious how bad this actually is.

Well like I said, a lot depends on the volume. At the highest comfortable setting, at night, they can be easily heard 10-12 feet away, and yes only high frequency will be heard since obviously headphone drivers provide bass for the entire room 🙂 However at low volume there is almost no sound leak at all.

Finally, you are starting to move into better quality headphones. You yelled at me for steering you in the right path and so I left the issue alone. Now, you're coming over to the light side. Welcome.

You suggested a headphone amp. That I will not do. My HK 435 will work just fine.

I was never opposed to higher quality headphones. I have a pair of Senn's PX100's which are an amazing value. Looking to go higher end with some for in room listening only.

One step at a time. To answer your question, you will be able to hear people talk (ie coworkers if they need to call you for something). And they will be able to hear your music if you blast it.

BTW you got the HK 635 right? Just an FYI, there is an update available for it now

yup. so comfortable you can wear them all day, too.
As far as the audio, it does leak, but only if you listen to it loud. At what I consider "normal" listening level (however I have sensitive ears) they are quieter than my computer when both are at arms length. Notably, the loudest thing on my computer is the Zalman 7000AlCu (hey I said I had sensitive hearing). I wouldn't care, for example to listen to porn while in the same room as my mother, or at work, but those are situations that I wouldn't be *watching* it in the first place. If you are concerned about irritating coworkers or roommates, the 555's are probably quieter than anythign that doesn't fit in the ear canal.

They changed it so now you place the mic 2 feet away for near field and (as was suggested by M CODE) now the mic is placed at ear level. Sounds like everybody is liking the update.
